General Announcements

Propose a New Standard or Technical Information Paper (TIP)

Getting started is easy. Do you have a general idea for a Standard, or have you made significant progress in developing a draft? If you have an idea for a Standard, please complete the New Idea Submission form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you have developed a draft, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

STAR of the Month

This TIP provides a review of the theory of thermocompressor operation as well as some practical guidelines and common mistakes on typical applications. This TIP provides a review of the theory of thermocompressor operation as well as some practical guidelines and common mistakes on typical applications.

Thermocompressors are widely used in paper machine steam and condensate systems. A thermocompressor is a jet ejector that uses high-pressure motive steam to recompress lower pressure steam. Typical applications include re- circulating blowthrough steam in a group of dryers or a Yankee cylinder, or boosting low-pressure steam for use in a system requiring higher operating pressures.

Please note that it is essential to establish proper design conditions, since thermocompressors are custom built for each application. An incorrectly designed unit can be unstable, uncontrollable, and waste significant amounts of steam.

The intention of this TIP is not to provide an engineering guideline for detailed design of thermocompressors or thermocompressor systems – this is a task that should be reserved for companies or individuals with specialized tools and expertise in these applications – but rather to provide an overview of thermocompressor application and operation.

SSIG Members Needed

The Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs) for the following Standards need additional members. These groups may or may not have ballots currently open.

All Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIG) require a minimum of 10 members in order to ballot and vote on a draft of a method. The following test methods do not have the required minimum number of members to initiate a ballot:

T 267 cm-15 Compression wood identification in pulpwood
T 515 om-20 Visual grading and color matching of paper
T 524 om-20 Color of paper and paperboard (45/0, C/2)
T 567 om-20 Determination of effective residual ink concentration (ERIC) by infrared reflectance measurement

Participating in a SSIG is free and open to anyone interested. Join now!

If no progress is made on balancing these SSIGs, then the respective methods may be considered for withdrawal at the next Q&SMC meeting. If you have an interest in becoming a member of these SSIGs please contact standards@tappi.org

Did You Know

... that to participate in the balloting process for TAPPI Standards you must sign up for the Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs)? Drafts are available for anyone to review, but to vote and comment you must be a member of the SSIG.

Every Standard has its own SSIG, meaning you must register separately for each Standard you're interested in. You can access links to all the SSIGs organized by subject category on the Join SSIGs webpage for Standards. Selecting the Subject Category if interest will lead you to the corresponding SSIGs to participate in.
