General Announcements

APPI Journal Joining the Open Access Movement

An internationally recognized technical publication for over 60 years, TAPPI Journal (TJ) publishes the latest and most relevant research on the forest products and related industries. A stringent peer-review process and distinguished editorial board of academic and industry experts set TAPPI Journal apart as a reliable source for impactful basic and applied research and technical reviews.

Beginning in 2020, TJ is joining the Open Access (OA) movement and improving the accessibility of its published articles. The OA movement increases researcher engagement and makes research more visible and accessible. This new format will be able to better help researchers meet their funding and grant application requirements and potentially increase the number of citations.

As in the past, TAPPI Journal is maintaining its rigorous peer review process and the copyright remains with the author. And, unlike other technical journals, TJ does not require a publication fee.

For the first year after publication, TAPPI members will be able to download articles published in TAPPI Journal for free as an exclusive member benefit and nonmembers can download the articles for a fee. On the one year anniversary of the issue’s publication, the articles will be accessible at no charge to everyone.

And, if that weren’t enough, your paper could win the $2,000 Honghi Tran TAPPI Journal Best Paper Prize presented at PaperCon. Submit your abstract today.

TAPPI Standards Online Balloting System Update

TAPPI has started to gradually re-open the ballots on the initial 20 Standards that were caught in the migration.

HigherLogic set up a temporary Workspace that has the same look and feel as what we previously used.  The prior ballot information has been loaded into this new site and we are gradually re-opening each of the existing ballots from the migration to give everyone a chance to vote.  Once each ballot re-opens, voters will receive an email notification that includes a link to the new voting location with a message stating the ballot has been AMENDED.  There will not be any changes to the existing ballots.  If you have already voted, you do not need to do so again, but are welcome to log in and review your previous choice.  As this is a different website, new usernames and passwords will be required for each user.

Once you receive an email notification that your ballot has been re-opened, if you have any issues with logging into the new site or need your username or password reset, please contact Kristin Whitman at KWhitman@tappi.org

Due to the migration failure that occurred, TAPPI decided to move to a different platform with Standards balloting and is currently testing options that better fit our needs. The site that we short listed and are currently evaluating will need some additional work completed, which will mean a longer set up timeframe than initially projected. We realize this downtime is affecting the Standards backlog so the above temporary solution (Workspace) has been put in place until our new platform is available.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Standards@tappi.org.

Thank you, we appreciate your patience while we work through and resolve the migration issues and look forward to bringing you an improved balloting experience in the future!

SSIG Members Needed

The Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs) for the following Standards are in need of additional members. These groups may or may not have ballots currently open.

T 237 cm-08 Carboxyl content of pulp (4 or more members needed)

T 611 cm-07 Analysis of bleaching powder, calcium hypochlorite bleach liquor and bleach sludge (1 or more members needed)

Please see additional SSIG members needed under Ballot section above.
