Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.
Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers.
These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them.
Below are the committees which are in need of your support:
Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee
Optical Properties Committee
Physical Properties Committee
Tissue Properties Subcommittee
Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require. Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees.
For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today.
Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference.
Please contact Steve Berg, P&PQ Division Chairman (sberg@thwingalbert.com) or Laurence Womack, Director of Standards and Awards (standards@tappi.org) for more information.
Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
All Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIG) require a minimum of 10 members in order to ballot and vote on a draft of a method.
T 438 cm-06 "Zinc and cadmium in paper" requires two more SSIG members for ballot.
If no progress is made on these ballots, then they might be considered for withdrawal at the next QSMC meeting. If you have an interest in becoming a member of either of these SSIGs please contact standards@tappi.org.
The standards eligible for approval at SARG are listed below. The asterisks (*) indicate the standards that will be eligible for submission to ANSI for consideration as American National Standards.
1. T 204 cm-17 "Solvent extractives of wood and pulp"
2. T 418 cm-17 "Organic nitrogen in paper and paperboard"
3. *T 525 om-17 "Diffuse brightness of paper, paperboard and pulp (d/0) – ultraviolet level C"

The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is will take place in Miami, FL, at the TAPPI 2017 Tissue Conference, Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at 8:00 am Eastern time. SARG approval is the last step prior to publication for any new or revised standard.
In order to act on any appeals from TAPPI members relevant to the standards up for approval, the SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation. The agenda will be posted on the SARG page at least 50 days prior to the meeting, in accordance with TAPPI’s guidelines.
If you would like to participate in the SARG meeting by conference call, please send a message before Sept 27, 2017, to standards@tappi.org.
Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on September 1, 2017. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.
Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from standards@tappi.org.
Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (October 4, 2017), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.
To provide updates regarding these reports, send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than Friday, October 4, 2017, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their next meeting.
