T 582 pm-22: High Shear Capillary Viscosity of Coating Color on Paper and Paperboard

Rod and blade coating with roll or jet application, film transfer coating and curtain coating are the most used techniques for paper or paperboard coating at high speeds. Coating colors are subjected to high stresses on all coaters, and shear rates can be at 500,000 1/s or higher. Therefore, this new standard method can be used for simulations of different coaters to help papermakers optimize blade pressures, coat weights and raw materials in order to avoid or solve runnability problems caused by coating colors.

Capillary viscosity data has proven to predict accurately coater runnability problems, which are based on rheological behaviors of coating colors. As a result, capillary viscosity can be used at paper and paperboard mills on daily basis as a prescreening device on different recipes before applying then on high-speed blade, rod or transfer coaters. No such previous test method or standard existed before.
