CSA Announces First Cellulosic Nanomaterials Standard: Z5100-14, Cellulosic nanomaterials – Test methods for characterization

CSA Group, a leading standards development, testing and certification organization, has released Canada’s first national standard on cellulosic nanomaterials: CSA Z5100-14, Cellulosic nanomaterials - Test methods for characterization. The new standard provides over 20 test methods allowing nanocellulose materials to be identified and characterized according to unique properties to encourage introduction into global markets.

This national Standard provides a consolidated set of test methods to characterize base cellulosic nanomaterials, specifically cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Over twenty test methods are provided, grouped into categories of purity, morphology, and physical and chemical properties. It is the first in a series of standards on cellulosic nanomaterials intended to serve as a foundation for the development of both Canadian and international standards to facilitate introduction of cellulosic nanomaterials into global markets. This Standard does not cover the characterization of cellulose microfibrils (CMFs), cellulose microcrystals (CMCs) or cellulosic nanomaterial enabled products.  Further information can be obtained by emailing brian.haydon@csagroup.org
