TIP 0508-10: An Introduction to Centrifugal Cleaners
The purpose of this Technical Information Paper is to introduce the reader to centrifugal cleaners, from basic theory of operation to practical operational issues. Specifically, high density, low consistency forward, and lightweight cleaner types are presented along with their purpose in stock preparation.

Most paper making pulps contain contaminants with either specific gravity and/or surface area which is different from usable fiber. Such contaminants can be separated using centrifugal forces that accentuate such differences. The most suitable equipment for removing these types of contaminants is the centrifugal cleaner; a static device that applies centrifugal force to a pulp slurry to separate fiber bundles (shives), heavy, and light components from the papermaking fibers.

The hydrocyclone is a closed vessel designed to convert the velocity of the feed stock into a spinning motion. The spinning velocity of the stock separates particles heavier than fiber to the wall of the cleaner body and lighter debris to a vortex at the inner portion. In conventional centrifugal cleaners, heavy rejects report to the apex of the cone and lighter particles report to the overflow (or base) of the cone. There are several other configurations that are discussed the text that follows.

Energy consumption in centrifugal cleaners is measured as a function of the pressure differential between the feed and accept streams, expressed in terms of the power consumed in the feed pumps that provide the pressure and velocity needed to make the centrifugal cleaner work.
