Proposed new TIP: Best practices for detecting and mitigating stress assisted corrosion (SAC) in power and recovery boilers

A proposal has been made for a new Technical Information Paper (TIP): "Best practices for detecting and mitigating stress assisted corrosion (SAC) in power and recovery boilers."

This proposed TIP describes the SAC damage mechanism and its controlling parameters; boiler components likely to experience SAC; inspection and testing methods; fitness-for-service assessment, and general guidelines for mitigating SAC. SAC is most effectively found and managed with an owner-managed testing and inspection program with formal analytical and testing practices and procedures, carried out by qualified mill personnel and non-destructive testing technicians, to find SAC and monitor its progress over time. This TIP provides guidelines for establishing such a program.

Any individuals who are interested in this TIP may join the Working Group and have an opportunity to review the TIP prior to its publication. If you would like to join the Working Group for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org no later than December 17, 2014.

TAPPI Standards guidelines require that all TAPPI members receive notification of any proposed new Standard or TIPs.
