Proposed new standard for roughness using a sharp-tipped stylus

A proposal has been made for a new standard test method: "Roughness of paper and paperboard, stylus (Emveco sharp tip-type) method" This new standard would be a companion piece to T 575 "Roughness of paper and paperboard, stylus (Emveco-type) method," which uses a flat stylus. The new method uses a sharp-tipped stylus.

The scope of the method is: This method measures the surface roughness of paper and paperboard used in contact printing processes. It may not be used for tissue or creped paper and may not be suitable for newsprint that is inspected for visual anomalies which cannot be detected with this equipment. The method is not useful for measuring surface waviness. This method uses a sharp-tipped stylus to mechanically trace the paper surface which differs from methods that relate the rate of air flow leakage to paper roughness.

A Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) must be formed for this proposal. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. If you would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org or by fax at +1-770-446-6947 no later than February 18, 2013.
