West Linn Paper Mill to Reopen This Summer with New Owner

Formerly the West Linn Paper Co., the plant will now be the Willamette Falls Paper Co. It will be a subsidiary of Peterson’s firm, Columbia Ventures, and Brian Konen, who had been chief operating officer of West Linn Paper, will be president of the new company.
 
Paper Formulation Technology Key to Sustainable Packaging
Ultimately, the impact will not be confined to items such as grocery bags and straws. Analysts expect the movement to extend to plastic bottles, disposable cups, food-service packaging and ready-meal containers. In fact, several major consumer brands, as well as a significant number of European retailers, have moved to reduce or eliminate their use of plastics in packaging. And more will certainly follow.

Paper-based Food Freshness Sensors Could Replace 'use-by' Dates to Cut Food Waste
These new laboratory prototype sensors, developed at Imperial College London, cost two US cents each to make. Known as ‘paper-based electrical gas sensors’ (PEGS), they detect spoilage gases like ammonia and trimethylamine in meat and fish products.

Old Town mill takes another step toward reopening
The mill has been closed since 2015, when former owner Expera abruptly shuttered its doors. Last October 15, however, the property was bought by ND Paper LLC, a subsidiary of Nine Dragons Paper of Hong Kong. Nine Dragons Paper is China’s largest producer of containerboard, which most commonly is used in making cardboard boxes.
 
Port Hawkesbury Paper Mill Reports Fire
Two Port Hawkesbury Paper employees and two volunteer firefighters were taken to hospital for treatment. Both PHP employees have been released along with one of the firefighters. Sources have been told the second firefighter is expected to be released later today.

Stora Enso Plans Consolidation of Spruce Production to One Sawmill in Finland
The consolidation plan is part of Stora Enso’s profit protection programme of EUR 120 million targeting reductions in variable and fixed costs. The possible consolidation is subject to completion of the co-determination negotiations at Kitee sawmill which will start in August. The production at Kitee sawmill is planned to be stopped gradually until the end of 2019.
 
Stora Enso Has ANDRITZ Deliver Extensive Rebuild in Finland
The order is part of Stora Ensoʼs project to convert the mill’s existing fine paper production to containerboard production based on virgin fiber kraftliner as well as to increase the capacity of the pulp mill and pulp drying line. The typical end uses for kraftliner are in packaging segments that require high strength, quality and purity, such as food, fruit and vegetables as well as heavy duty packaging.

The project, which was kicked-off in May 2019, has received EUR 5.9 million funding from the Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. The total budget of the project is EUR 9.6 million and it is one of several undertakings aimed at developing a sustainable bio-based industry sector in Europe.
