Packaging Digest report this week suggests digital integration in the manufacturing process, everyday luxury upscaling of food and beverages, multi-use designs, and a wide range of container design types for marijuana (as state-by-state legalization of the market is continuing to be tolerated federally) are all rising as big, new trends in paperboard packaging.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö Billingsfors, Sweden Pulp Mill Scheduled for Valmet Upgrade
Main objective is to increase the capacity of the recovery boiler and boost environmental performance. Value of this kind of order is typically above EUR 10 million. Lower part of the recovery boiler will be replaced with a new pressure vessel based on the latest designs for Valmet's high-performing RECOX boilers. Start up scheduled for mid-2019.
 
Columbia Pulp Opens Pilot Plant Producing Paper Pulp from Waste Straw in Washington
Columbia Pulp expects the pilot plant to produce 10 short tons of pulp per day, and to be fully operational by September. Once construction is completed on its Lyons Ferry mill, Columbia's pilot plant will remain open to produce smaller client orders.
 
Metsä Group’s Pulp & Bioproduct Mill Reaches Full Production Capacity
This makes Metsä Group the world’s largest producer of softwood market pulp. The bioproduct mill in Äänekoski, Finland produced its one millionth metric ton of pulp on August 8. Key bioproduct development projects at the mill include pulp-based lignin products and textile fibers.
 
Taison Pulp Orders Two New Tissue Machines from Andritz
18ft PrimeDry Steel Yankee with steam-heated hood enables highly efficient drying with energy savings compared to conventional dryer sections with cast Yankee dryers and gas-heated hoods. Machines will produce up to 120,000 metric tpy and are designed for grammages from 12 to 42 g/m2 used for facial and toilet paper. Start-up is scheduled for 2019 in Suzhou, China.

Burgo Plans to Convert Second Newest European Mechanical Coated PM to Containerboard
This is despite the fact that PM 9 is currently the second-newest LWC machine in Europe. The 9.6m-wide machine went into production in 2002 with a capacity of 400,000 metric tpy. Containerboard production on PM 9 is scheduled to begin in late 2019 and will be designed for a capacity of 600,000 metric tpy.
 
Copamex Converting Anáhuac Mill from Graphic Paper Production to Containerboard
The Voith reconfigured machine is scheduled to restart in the early part of this upcoming year. It will have a capacity of approx. 260,000 metric tpy making testliner and fluting. The design chosen by Copamex can use a special combination of raw material such as OCC and mixed paper types.
 
Mondi Acquires Suez Bags in Egypt
Suez Bags is an industrial bags producer operating one plant near Cairo, Egypt serving mostly regional customers and is Mondi’s second industrial bags acquisition in Egypt, following the acquisition of NPP in June this year. Mondi now owns 96% of the company.
 
Shanying Int. Has Valmet Supply Additional OptiConcept M Containerboard Line
New production line with wide automation package is following the delivery of previous OptiConcept M board machine announced in Dec. 2017 and three winders announced this February. PM 23 is designed to produce high-quality fluting grades up to 1,200 metric tpd. Value around EUR 30-40 million. Start up scheduled for late 2019 in Hubei, China.

Schlüter Print Pharma Packaging's ownership expressed excitement and optimism about working as part of WestRock, commenting that they believe WestRock is well positioned to grow the Germany-based business and develop solutions for their customers today and in the future.

Twin Rivers Leads Consumer Organizations in Filing for Review of SEC Rule 30e-3
SEC states the purpose of the new rule is to permit electronic delivery of fund shareholder reports, while maintaining the ability of shareholders who prefer paper to receive reports in that form. This is despite how the current system already allows for electronic delivery where investors prefer, an option that has been in place for over a decade.
 
U.S. Commerce Dept. Issues Revised Duties for Canadian Uncoated Groundwood Paper
Department determined that two individually investigated companies had final dumping rates of 0.00%, and one company had a final dumping rate of 16.88%. The department also determined that the final dumping margin assigned to all other producers is a rate of 0.00%.

So as to cut food loss, nano-roughness can be achieved two ways: the surface material is roughened with a type of applied coating, or the surface material consists of an absorbent polymer. In the latter case, the molecular structure of the material itself exhibits the necessary nano-roughness.

Bob Grygotis prepares to retire as GM at Ashdown on September 1. Allan Bohn will move to Ashdown, replacing Gryotis. Everick Spence is being promoted to replace Bohn as Plymouth Mill manager. Both Bohn and Spence will report to Steve Makris, Pulp business VP, effective September 1.

Alan Nichols, EVP of Graphic Packaging International’s Mills Division, elected to retire on September 15. Michael Farrell has been named successor. Farrell has held leadership positions at Graphic Packaging over the last 13 years, including VP, Recycled Board Mills.
