To celebrate Earth Day (April 22), Professor Arthur Ragauskas, The Institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST) at Georgia Tech, Atlanta, Ga., USA, plans to hold the third global earth day poster session on his web site. The poster session will deal with the education and science/technology of converting bioresources to biofuels, biopower, bio-based materials, and chemicals. It will open Earth Day and be available to the general public.

Dr. Kari Ebeling a TAPPI Fellow since 1999, started his career as a research assistant at KCL, the Finnish Pulp and Paper Research Institute, serving from 1963 - 1965, following his graduation from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1963. Dr. Ebeling journeyed to the U.S. to become a student at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wis., where he earned his PhD. His thesis on structural behavior of paper in straining was judged best in his class. He earned The Westbrooke Steel Medal for his work, and his thesis formed the basis for future research in the industry.

Dr. Ebeling went on to serve as manager, R&D for Nokia Forest Industries from 1970 - 1978. In 1978 he began working as a professor of Paper Technology at the Helsinki University of Technology. During his years of teaching, Dr. Ebeling continued to work as a scientific advisor and consultant to various companies, many of which were heavily involved in the pulp and paper industry. From 1987 - 1989, he worked as director, Corporate R&D, for James River Corp. He began serving as Kymmene (later UPM-Kymmene Corp.) director, Corporate R&D while also serving as its senior scientific advisor from 1987 until his retirement in 2004.

Dr. Ebling's career achievements include nomination to the TAPPI Fellowship in 1999. He received the SLR I medal from the Republic of Finland and the Keller Award from the German Papier Technische Stiftung, and is an invited member of The Royal Swedish Engineering Academy. The Finnish Paper Engineers' association awarded him the Stenback medal. The Finnish Foundation for the Advancement of Technology (TES) gave Dr. Ebeling the 2007 Technology Prize for his contributions towards educating skilled paper engineers for the needs of the industry, for a career of successful R&D, and for promoting a R&D positive atmosphere for Finland's paper industry.

Dr. Ebeling married his wife, Tuula, in 1963. They had two children together – Petro and Nina. His retirement allowed him to spend time with his seven grandchildren.

2012 Pulp and Paper Manufacturers Association Annual Meeting in May The Pulp and Paper Manufacturers Association (PPMA) Annual Meeting and Conference will be held May 9-11, 2012 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. PPMA provides human resource information to the pulp, paper, converting and allied industries. The meeting includes a program of expert speakers covering topics such as labor law, training and health care, extensive networking opportunities and updates on key industry research including an annual salary survey.

"The 2012 Annual Meeting will provide attendees with helpful information that can be used to improve business performance, including results from our annual salary surveys and other human resource information," notes PPMA Executive Director, Dick Kendall. "In addition, we have a strong speaker line-up including David Scheible, CEO of Graphic Packaging, who will share his views and insights on how to sustain results in a tough economic and business climate."

The theme of this year's conference is "On the Anvil." Howard DeGroot, a TAPPI member since 1968 and a TAPPI Fellow beginning in 1980, had a profound influence on the paper industry's use of new coating and graphic arts technology. He attended his first TAPPI Coating Conference in 1958 and 20 years later found himself chairing that event in Denver, Colo. Just two years later, in 1980, he became chairman of the Coating and Graphic Arts (C&GA) Division, which awarded him its Leadership and Service award in 1988.

A key to DeGroot's career in the paper industry was a degree in chemistry from Aurora College, in Illinois. His first job was a wallpaper chemist where his experience with air knives and coatings created a subsequent path into paper coating and graphic arts. He then worked with Oxford Paper R&D, helping develop modern blade coating technology. During the 1970s, he directed Oxford's efforts to develop and commercialize the use of new resins, co-polymers, and continuous adhesive preparatory methods. He also worked for Boise Cascade in the 1980s, overseeing the implementation of new coating machines and other associated improvements.

DeGroot has been internationally recognized for his pioneering research and development work in coating technology, and he gained great distinction as a volunteer TAPPI leader. His active participation in conferences and seminars, as speaker, panelist, or program/conference chairman, provided invaluable inspiration to others. His tireless efforts to attract young technical men and women to the division's committees and programs ensured the continued, dynamic growth of the C&GA Division up to today, and into the future.

Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award - The Association's highest technical honor may be presented annually to recognize an individual or individuals for preeminent scientific and engineering achievements of proven commercial benefit to the world's pulp, paper, board, and forest products industries and the other industries that TAPPI serves.

Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award - The Association's highest award for service, may be presented annually to recognize leadership and service which have significantly and demonstrably contributed to the advancement of the Association.

Paul W. Magnabosco Outstanding Local Section Member Award – The highest honor for Local Sections may be presented annually to recognize an individual for outstanding leadership and exceptional service to one or more Local Sections, which have resulted in significant and demonstrable benefits to the Local Section members.

TAPPI Fellow - TAPPI Fellows are Individuals who have been members of TAPPI for not less than 10 years prior to the nomination, and who have contributed meritorious service to the Association and/or the paper and related industries. Retiring members of the TAPPI Board of Directors become Fellows automatically at the end of their term.
