The National Center for Pulp and Paper Technology Training announced that Rainy River Community College (RRCC), International Falls, Minn., joined The National Network for Pulp and Paper Technology Training (NPT2). The Network is a national partnership of community colleges and industry representatives that arms students with the training and experience necessary to meet the increasing demand for advanced technology workers in the pulp and paper industry.
"We are very excited to add RRCC to our network of community colleges offering Pulp and Paper technology training across the country," said T.J. Murphy, executive director of The National Center for Pulp and Paper Technology Training. "RRCC is recognized by business, government, and community leaders for its outstanding workforce development and training programs."
Rainy River Community College was founded in 1967 by a group of dedicated individuals who wanted post-secondary education offered in International Falls at the heart of Minnesota's north woods. Rainy River fosters learning by surrounding its students with an environment rich in natural wonder. The 80-acre campus has an eight-building complex connected with heated walkways.
"Rainy River Community College's partnership with NPT2 and Itasca Community College will make available additional training and experience necessary to meet the increasing demand for advanced technology workers at local paper mill Boise Inc.," said Tammy Cook, director of Instructional Services at RRCC. "In addition, this partnership will enhance the value of the Industrial Technology program, already offered by RRCC.
The National Network for Pulp & Paper Technology Training (NPT2) was created to provide the pulp and paper sector of the US forest products industry with a Technologically Advanced Workforce (TAW) by offering exciting and effective education and training. The National Network is an alliance of community colleges, universities, industry partners and the National Science Foundation. It offers a proven program for recruiting, training, placing and retaining future pulp and paper workers by providing technical curriculum, continuing education, scholarships and internships. The National Network for Pulp & Paper Technology Training's scholarships-internships-jobs model succeeds because its partnerships address the complete cycle of worker training and development, from recruitment of new students to retention of existing workers.
The National Network is a part of the TAW platform supported as an important technology platform by the American Forest and Paper Association's special project group, Agenda 2020, and TAPPI.
For more information about the partnership, contact T.J. Murphy, executive director, NPT2, tmurphy@ascc.edu, (334) 637-3193 or Tammy Cook, Director of Instructional Services, RRCC, tcook@rrcc.mnscu.edu, (218) 285-2265.

TAPPI has announced a new partnership with Biofuels Digest to co-produce 2011 BioPro Expo & Marketplace. The BioPro Expo & Marketplace will take place in Atlanta on March 14-16, 2011, at the Atlanta Hilton. This event examines practical methodologies for quickly transitioning products, residues and waste streams into energy and biofuel.
Biofuels Digest consists of the BiofuelsDigest.com news website, Biofuels Digest Asia, the daily Biofuels Digest e-newsletter, and the Biofuels Digest Newswire. The Digest covers producer news, research, policy, policymakers, conferences, fleets and financial news. It is home to the Biofuels Digest IndexTM, The 30 Most Transformative Technologies, and the "50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy" annual rankings.
Biofuels Digest and TAPPI have a combined reach of nearly 95,000 professionals in the bioenergy and biofuels community. Joining together further promotes both organizations' goals of educating, informing and advancing the knowledge base in this emerging industry.
"We've been fans of TAPPI and its people for quite some time," said Jim Lane, editor and publisher of Biofuels Digest. "So when the opportunity came up to help take the BioPro Expo & Marketplace to the next level, we jumped. We see it as a platform for the industry to build stronger partner and supplier opportunities, faster, as the supply chain develops for the fast-growing bioproducts sector."
The BioPro Expo program will cover key areas surrounding biomass conversion with separate tracks focused on barriers to implementation and feedstock options. The former covers topics such as funding and regulatory challenges and the latter includes purpose grown crops, waste streams and emerging technologies. Other highlights include sessions on emerging migration technologies. They focus on co-production of cellulosic and agricultural feedstocks together or separately in fully integrated process sequences. The 5th annual International Bioenergy and Bioproducts Conference (IBBC) is also being held at BioPro Expo and attendees win by being able to participate in sessions at both events.
"The partnership between Biofuels Digest and BioPro Expo is very exciting because conference and expo attendees will benefit from having the best of both worlds at this event," said Larry N. Montague, president and CEO of TAPPI. "BioPro Expo will offer a unique mix of content covering both cellulosic biomass conversion and renewable energy. Biofuels Digest is well recognized for its news, reports and policy updates, and TAPPI is renowned for its content, information on cutting-edge research, technical expertise and practical solutions."
BioPro Expo is a large conference and exhibition in the Southeastern United States, backed by 22 industry partners. They reflect the full biomass processing spectrum for multiple industries, from supply through demand and utilization. In-depth educational sessions are backed by a trade show focused on cutting-edge technology, products and services available today.
