Get Involved

The need for quality, standardized safety orientation has become more apparent across the pulp and paper industry. Not only has there been a drive for increased safety, but the economy over the past several years has forced the industry to look for a more cost-effective means to deliver contractor safety orientation.

In early 2010, TAPPI took on the challenge of delivering a high quality, cost-effective safety orientation solution. Along with the Alliance Safety Council, which has delivered similar safety training services to the oil and power industries, TAPPI developed TAPPISAFE. And the industry has immediately embraced it as an effective safety solution.

The success of TAPPISAFE to date has been largely due to the great input and support of major mills who participated on the TAPPISAFE Advisory Board and those mills that have launched pilot programs to test the new systems.

Because of this growing support, TAPPISAFE has developed a "Supporter Program" to recognize these companies and organizations. The supporting companies will be included in our marketing and communication literature and on the TAPPISAFE website

If your organization would like to be recognized as a TAPPISAFE supporter, please contact Simona Marcellus by Wednesday, June 27 to be included in our upcoming communication literature and website.

Kimberly-Clark Corp., Dallas, Texas, USA, this week announced plans to significantly reduce its forest fiber footprint, including a goal to transition at least 50% of wood fiber sourced from natural forests to alternate fiber sources by 2025.

This new initiative will help protect biodiversity and reduce the impacts of fiber that the company uses while ensuring the fiber is sourced in an environmentally and socially responsible way. Equally important, it will also help insulate the company from continuing volatile price fluctuations in the world fiber market. The announcement was made in conjunction with the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, recently held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"We continue to strongly support sustainable forestry where those materials are needed, but at the same time we are aggressively exploring high-potential alternatives to the traditional fiber sources used in our industry, while maintaining the high quality standards our customers and consumers have come to expect," says Suhas Apte, VP, Global Sustainability for K-C. "In the long run, we hope that one day all of our fiber needs will be met from sources that collectively have maximum land use efficiencies while minimizing impact on people and our planet."

In 2011, the company used nearly 750,000 metric tons of primary wood fiber sourced from natural forests. With this new commitment, K-C pledges to cut the amount sourced from natural forests in half by 2025, an amount equivalent to the fiber used to manufacture more than 3.5 billion rolls of toilet paper.

The initiative focuses on exploration of alternative sources of fiber for K-C's products, such as plants that make efficient and sustainable use of land and resources with the desired intent not to displace food crops or lead to loss of natural forests:. Examples include:

  • Andrex Eco bath tissue, launched in the U.K., contains 10% bamboo and 90% recycled fiber
  • K-C Professional is currently test marketing tissue products that contain 20% bamboo in North America
  • K-C also has recently signed a development agreement with Booshoot, a biotech firm in Washington State and the global leader in bamboo forestry. The agreement will enable further exploration into the supply chain to manufacture K-C tissue products containing bamboo using Booshoot's unique bamboo propagation technology
  • Rapidly growing tree plantation sourced fiber.

Examples of alternative sources also includes "waste" fibers currently discarded or considered of low value such as agricultural crop remnants that remain in the field after harvesting. For example:

  • K-C Professional is currently test marketing tissue products made in part with alternative fibers including wheat straw in North America
  • K-C is also exploring alternative processing technologies and supply chain solutions for using such waste fibers.

To ensure it understands and responsibly manages the impacts of its decisions, K-C has commissioned a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and broader sustainability risk assessment with the Georgia Institute of Technology.

More information on K-C's sustainability initiatives is available online.

On July 25, the USDA Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) will conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new pilot-scale production facilities for renewable forest-based nanomaterials in Madison, Wis., USA. The event will also feature tours of the FPL and a symposium on forest-based nanotechnology/nanomaterials.

The new FPL pilot plant will help serve as a gateway to a market for new wood-derived renewable materials that has been estimated to be worth up to $600 billion in sales by 2020. The U.S. and other nations will see numerous benefits from the commercialization of wood-derived cellulosic nanomaterials as new products are developed and used in commercially important end-use applications. This will result in the creation of many new high-paying jobs, enable production of new generations of lightweight/high performance products that will reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and increase manufacturing in many rural areas.

The pilot scale facility is aimed at aiding the commercialization of cellulosic nanomaterials by providing researchers and early adopters with working quantities of forest-based nanomaterials. The facility is capable of producing approximately 30 lb. per day or more of forest-based nanomaterials. The USDA Forest Service has invested $2 million in these new facilities and has invested more than $30 million in other research over the past five years to support the underlying science and technology needed to move commercialization of forest-based nanomaterials forward.

Forest-based nanomaterials have many desirable characteristics, according to FPL. They can be as strong or stronger than many current high performance petroleum-based synthetic fibers and promise high-strength components with low weight—attributes that have attracted the interest of the military as well as companies in the automotive, aerospace, electronics, consumer products, and medical device industries. Forest-based nanomaterials also have applications as barriers in packaging and as coatings to enable printed electronics and inexpensive sensors. In support of this area of new industrial collaboration, several of the preceding industries will be participating in the ribbon cutting ceremony, including the Forest Products Industry's Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance

Georgia-Pacific, Atlanta, Ga., USA, the maker of Brawny® paper towels, this week launched a national campaign and partnership with Wounded Warrior Project™ (WWP) to help support and raise awareness of the needs of injured service members and their families across the nation. WWP is a national organization dedicated to supporting these Wounded Warriors as they recover and transition back to civilian life.

As part of the campaign, G-P is making a direct donation of $250,000 to WWP, and to raise awareness for the cause, the Brawny brand will donate $1 up to an additional $250,000 for every individual who:

  • Shares a "Thank You" note on the Brawny Towels Facebook page
  • "Likes" Brawny Towels on Facebook, or
  • Texts THANKS to 272969 between now and December 31.

The Brawny "Support Our Heroes" campaign will continue through December 31, and features a marketing campaign including television and print advertisements and digital elements, as well as special Brawny paper towel packaging highlighting Wounded Warrior stories at participating retailers.

"Overcoming the physical and emotional challenges of adjusting to life post-war is a test of strength every injured service member and their family face on a daily basis. The Brawny brand could not be prouder to support such a worthy cause," explained Lanier Thomas, director of marketing, Brawny. "By offering our consumers a number of ways to get involved and share their thanks, we hope to raise awareness of the needs of injured service members and their families and demonstrate support for our men and women in uniform who have given so much."

Donations raised from the campaign will benefit a variety of programs and services WWP offers to meet the needs of injured service members and their families. WWP programs support warriors who have incurred wounds, injuries, or illnesses on or after Sept. 11, 2001, and are uniquely structured to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement.

WWP programs serve warriors with every type of injury, from the physical to the invisible wounds of war. It is estimated that more than 48,000 servicemen and women have been physically injured in recent military conflicts, another 320,000 are believed to have experienced a traumatic brain injury while on deployment, and as many as 400,000 additional service members live with the invisible wounds of war including combat-related stress, major depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

More information on the campaign, or to see how you can get involved, is available online, as is more information on WWP or to make a direct donation to the organization.

Resolute Forest Products, Montreal, Que., Canada, reports that it has indefinitely idled the Mersey newsprint mill at Brooklyn, Nova Scotia. The facility, owned by Bowater Mersey Paper Co., Ltd. (BMPCL), is a joint venture between Resolute (51%) and the Washington Post (49%). The indefinite idling began Sunday, June 17.

"The mill produces newsprint primarily for export markets and is unable to compete due to declining prices in those markets, caused mainly by unfavorable currency fluctuations, said Richard Garneau, president and CEO of Resolute. "The decision to indefinitely idle production at the facility was difficult as we are mindful of the impact it will have on affected employees and local communities. We have worked diligently with the provincial government, our employees, union leadership, and other stakeholders, but simply could not overcome the inherent challenges."

The indefinite idling will reduce capacity by approximately 250,000 metric tpy of newsprint. Approximately 320 employees at the Mersey paper mill, associated woodlands, Oakhill sawmill, and Brooklyn Power Corp. will be affected by this action. Resolute will continue to work collaboratively with governments to ensure that impacted employees are provided support during this transition.

The company is currently assessing the feasibility of selling all of its assets in Nova Scotia, including its private timberlands, the paper mill, sawmill, and Brooklyn Power.

Resolute Forest Products owns or operates 21 pulp and paper mills and 22 wood products facilities in the U.S., Canada, and South Korea.

In the Philippines, plastic is out and paper is in, according to a report this week by S&T Media Service published in the Philippines-based Daily Mirror. The country's science agency is looking into more ways to make paper packaging, considered to be an environmental-friendly option to plastic, more accessible to all and even provide additional income opportunities to people, the article notes.

"The greater use of paper packaging is in line with our current initiatives that protect the environment and uplift the ecosystem," said Science Secretary Mario Montejo. "One of the thrusts of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is the support to green technologies, products and services."

In Metro Manila and nearby areas, the Daily Mirror article explains, more and more local governments are slowly easing out the use of plastic, compelling stores and vendors to use paper bags in wrapping their wares.

"People have become more aware of the environmental risks posed by the continued use of plastics after the onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy. Today, 27 towns already have in place local ordinances that regulate the use of plastic bags," Aimee Beatrix Habon, Science Research Specialist at DOST's Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) Technology Innovation Division, stated in the article. "Increased demand for pulp and paper means more challenges for the industry and for DOST-FPRDI, as well," Habon added.

FPRDI has completed ongoing research studies on alternative raw materials—such as low-grade abaca fibers, banana fibers, and palm oils' empty fruit bunch fibers—for packaging paper, according to Adela Torres, chief of FPRDI's Pulp and Paper Products Development Section.

FPRDI is also working out a collaboration with the University of the Philippines Los Baños' Institute of Plant Breeding in studying hybrid abaca as reinforcement fiber. Currently, FPRDI is part of the Department of Trade and Industry-Bureau of Product Standards' Technical Committee on Board, Paper and Pulp, which develops standards for packaging paper.

FPRDI was likewise part of the initial stages when the "No-to-Plastic" campaign in Los Baños, Laguna, was conceptualized. Los Baños was one of the first towns in the country to regulate the use of plastic bags for packaging, the Daily Mirror article pointed out.

Published Pricing
Sonoco, Hartsville, S.C., USA, will implement a surcharge of 8.6% for its nailed wood reels, effective July 1. The company says the surcharge is necessary to offset the steady increase in lumber costs experienced over the past two years.

"We have chosen to use a surcharge rather than changing our base price because we feel lumber costs should soften later this year," said Greg Powell, GM, Sonoco Reels. "Our plan will be to adjust the surcharge to reflect any future decline in lumber pricing. At the same time, should the cost for lumber continue to increase, our surcharge would be adjusted accordingly."

Energy
Biomass is responsible for generating 20% of all energy consumption in Sweden and wood-fired district heating systems satisfy more than half of the residential heat demand, according to a new report by Research and Markets, Dublin, Ireland, titled Biomass Industry in Sweden. The industry became robust because of a combination of factors and has evolved since its beginning.

The majority of Sweden's energy supply is for the purpose of electricity generation, district heating, and fuel transportation, the report notes, adding that renewable resources contributed more than 10% of Sweden's electricity supply as of 2011. Sweden's abundant forest resources make biomass feedstock the largest renewable energy source as 60% of Sweden is covered in forests, and woody biomass, including timber residual feedstock.

The Swedish government pursues a regulatory strategy calling for nuclear power and renewable resources including wind power, solar power, biomass power, and hydroelectric power for electricity generation, to help the country make the transition to a low-carbon economy. Going forward, the EU's directive on renewable sources will likely make the Swedish government's call for stricter policy measures, resulting in a rapid expansion of renewable power generation within the country's total electricity supply mix.

Currently, Sweden uses tax breaks and other financial incentives, including exemption from tolls and parking fees, to encourage citizens to drive cars that utilize renewable fuels, the report explains. The utilities industry in Sweden is characterized by a limited choice for consumers, as the utilities are often state or regional monopolies. In Sweden, limited choice for consumers becomes a major challenge for potential biomass operators to enter Sweden's biomass power market. Although liberalization has allowed the entrance of an increasing number of smaller electricity resellers, the Swedish market is still composed of several large-scale companies.
