Metsä Group and Fortum Recycling & Waste have signed an agreement on dismantling the old pulp mill in Kemi, Finland. Fortum Recycling & Waste will be the main contractor for the demolition project and the demolition site will employ approximately 50 people. The price of the demolition contract will not be disclosed.

Paper Excellence Canada announced the indefinite curtailment of paper operations at the Catalyst Crofton facility located on Vancouver Island, BC.

Kadant Inc. announced it has completed the acquisition of KWS Manufacturing Company, Ltd. for approximately $84 million in cash, subject to certain customary adjustments. The acquisition was financed primarily through borrowings under Kadant's revolving credit facility.

Shandong Huatai Paper and Voith Paper successfully started up PM 11 in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong. PM 11, a former newsprint machine, was successfully rebuilt for the production of high-quality graphic paper. The machine's web width is 10.2 meters and the design speed 1,800 m/min. With the help of leading Voith technologies, the annual capacity of the rebuilt PM 11 can be increased from 400,000 to 520,000 tons.

I hope that 2024 is off to a great start for you. As we close the book on 2023 and begin anew in 2024, it will be interesting to see what lies in store for the printing and packaging industry in this New Year. The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its the Q4 2023 Containerboard Quarterly report.

In 2023, the roundwood prices on delivery timber increased for sawlogs by 12 percent and for pulpwood by 37 percent in comparison to 2022. The prices are volume weighted averages for delivery timber and refer to current prices, which do not take inflation into account.

Packaging Corporation of America (NYSE: PKG) on Jan. 24 reported fourth quarter 2023 net income of $189 million, or $2.10 per share, and net income of $192 million, or $2.13 per share, excluding special items.

Toscotec will supply an OPTIMA 1800 slitter rewinder to the Navigator Company at their Cacia production base in Aveiro, Portugal. The start-up is planned for the second half of 2024.

Guangdong Hengan Paper Co., Ltd. has successfully started up the two new ANDRITZ PrimeLine tissue machines at its mill in Yunfu, Guangdong, China. Hengan has now 15 ANDRITZ tissue machines in operation.

WestRock Company announced plans to build a new corrugated box plant in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, to meet growing demand from customers in the Great Lakes region. The company intends to close its existing plant in North Chicago when construction of the new facility is completed.

International technology group ANDRITZ was selected by tissue producer Softys Peru as technology partner for a completey new kind of hybrid Yankee hood heating system.
