In Memoriam: Long Time TAPPI Member, Arthur J. "Ben" Haug (1919 -2009)

Longtime TAPPI member Arthur J. "Ben" Haug, 103, Punta Gorda, FL and Rome, ME, passed away at his home with family on Monday, October 24th, 2022. It was a comfort to his family that he passed on his and his wife, Winifred Ann’s 69th wedding anniversary.

Haug graduated Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1941 with a BS, cum laude, in Chemistry. While at MU he won numerals in freshman football, and a letter in track, was a member of the Phi Chi Psi social fraternity and Sigma Gamma Chi, honorary chemistry fraternity. Then he enrolled at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, WI, a specialized graduate school. Haug became a member of TAPPI (Tech. Assn. of the Paper Industry) and remained a member for over 50 years. At the end of the second year he received a Master's degree and the school was shut down due to WWII.

In 1960 the Haug Family, now 7, moved to New Town Square, PA and Ben became the Staff Technical Control Manager. He also was the manager of the Hoboken, NJ plant that made Cut Rite Wax paper. In 1965, The family moved to Queensbury, a suburb of Glens Falls, NY where Ben became the Manager of the Fort Edward Plant in NY. While there he was a member of the Ft. Edward Rotary Club and became its President. In 1967 the family moved to Waterville, ME and Ben became the Division Vice President and Manager of the Scott Winslow Pulp and Paper Plant and its Woodlands.

In 1978, Ben retired after 31 years with Scott Paper Co. and soon after he became the President and CEO of the Forster Mfg. Co., Inc. in Wilton, ME. In 1986 he retired and moved to Punta Gorda, FL.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church and Internment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade Lakes at later dates. The family would like to immensely thank our dad’s loving and devoted caregiver, Jessica Walker, for truly going above and beyond caring for our dad for his last years! We are forever grateful!!
