SCA, Sweden, this week reported that it will begin an environmental impact assessment for a possible investment in a new paper machine at the paper mill in Obbola, Sweden. 

Under investigation is a production increase from the current 450,000 metric tons of kraftliner per year to 850,000 tons of kraftliner per year. To supply a larger paper machine with fiber, production of pulp based on both fresh fiber and recovered fiber would have to increase.

 

 

"No decision has been taken," says Obbola paper mill Acting Plant Manager Per Strand. "We're seeing a long-term increase in demand for packaging paper, and we're investigating different development opportunities for the paper mill. Environmental conditions are an important factor in being able to assess various development alternatives, which is why we're now starting this impact assessment."

The Obbola paper mill will begin the assessment by inviting in government authorities and nearby residents to present the potential development plans. The mill produces 450,000 tons of kraftliner per year and has approximately 300 employees.

Originally founded as a sawmill in 1889, Obbola was rebuilt to manufacture pulp in 1913 and began producing kraftliner in 1975. Key milestones for the mill include:

• 2013—New wash press and white liquor handling; improved quality
• 2010—New green liquor handling; improved quality
• 2009—New  evaporation plant: upgrade pulp mill chemical recovery
• 2007—New recovery boiler: improved green energy utilization
• 2000—Recovered fiber stock prep upgrade for improved sheet appearance.
• 1998 –Major wet end rebuild improved strength properties and surface characteristics
• 1992—Installation of wide nip press improved strength and properties
• 1975—Kraftliner machine start-up and kraft mill expansion
