Stretch Kraft™: Smurfit Westrock’s Paper-Based Wrap Solution

Smurfit Westrock has developed Stretch Kraft™, an innovative paper-based pallet wrap designed to serve as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic stretch film.

Manufactured entirely from 100% virgin long fibres, Stretch Kraft™ is fully recyclable, renewable, and printable. The material offers high energy absorption and humidity resistance, enabling it to meet the operational demands of pallet wrapping. Its use can reduce approximately 300 grams of single-use plastic per pallet.

The product was developed through collaboration between Smurfit Westrock’s Paper and Corrugated divisions, combining fiber-based material expertise with functional packaging design.
In recognition of its contribution to sustainable packaging, Stretch Kraft™ received first place in the

Sustainability category at the Legrand Innovation Awards, an international competition highlighting innovations in industrial and digital infrastructure.

“As regulations on plastic packaging become increasingly stringent, we expect the demand for recyclable, renewable solutions to grow,” said Javier Rivas, President Paper and Mills Europe, MEA and APAC at Smurfit Westrock. “Stretch Kraft™ demonstrates our commitment to supporting customers with practical fiber-based alternatives.”

Through initiatives like Stretch Kraft™, Smurfit Westrock continues to explore the potential of paper-based technologies in replacing fossil-derived materials for transport and logistics applications.
