Saica Group’s Hartlepool facility Achieves First-Ever Saica Zero to Landfill Certificate in the UK

Saica Group, a European leader in sustainable packaging solutions, has announced that its Hartlepool facility is the first site in the United Kingdom to be awarded the Saica Zero to Landfill Certificate. This milestone not only underlines the Group’s long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility and circular economy principles, but also marks the first time a Saica Pack plant has received this recognition in the company’s history.

Developed by Saica Natur—the Group’s division dedicated to waste management and environmental services—the Zero to Landfill recognition is awarded to sites that consistently divert at least 95% of all waste from landfill through reuse, recycling, or energy recovery, and that ensure full compliance with applicable regulatory standards. The certificate is independently verified by TÜV SÜD and is considered one of the most rigorous benchmarks in the industry.

At the Hartlepool site, the recognition followed a six-month audit in which nearly 4,000 tonnes of waste were assessed. TÜV SÜD confirmed a 97% diversion rate, with no major deviations. The audit included a detailed evaluation of waste segregation and handling practices, infrastructure, and adherence to updated UK waste legislation—supported throughout by Saica Natur.

This accomplishment was made possible by the close collaboration between Simon McLeod, HSE Manager at Saica Pack Hartlepool, and Colesia Pryse, National Account Manager at Saica Natur. The team conducted a thorough review of all waste management processes and compiled the comprehensive documentation required for certification.

Simon Banks, UK & Ireland Country Manager at Saica Pack, commented: “We are delighted that Saica Hartlepool has been honoured with the Saica Natur Zero to Landfill recognition. This demonstrates Saica Group’s commitment not only to delivering sustainable solutions and outstanding service, but also to leading by example.”

Jim Malone, UK Country Manager at Saica Natur, added: “With evolving waste regulations in the UK, Saica Pack Hartlepool is setting a benchmark for industry best practices. At Saica Natur, we help businesses reduce operational costs, improve efficiencies, and minimize their environmental footprint.”

The certification also includes mandatory annual performance reviews and a comprehensive reassessment every three years, ensuring ongoing accountability and continuous improvement. As the UK progresses toward its net-zero targets, Saica Group exemplifies how sustainable practices and profitable manufacturing can successfully go hand in hand.
