German packaging manufacturer Weig is entering the North American market. The move is being spearheaded by its business unit Weig Europack and will be implemented in close partnership with US-based sales agent Sharp International.
Sharp International will act as Weig Europack’s exclusive distributor in North America. The company operates a network of warehouses located in Montreal, New York, Savannah and Houston. Sharp International holds full sales rights for the region for Weig cartonboard grades Pirol, Kiwi, Ibis and Unipack/UnipackF.
Weig’s market entry is driven by increasing demand in the United States for sustainable packaging materials, particularly in the consumer goods, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors, Weig said. Medium-sized converters in the US are increasingly seeking European suppliers to diversify away from dominant domestic players. At the same time, regulatory and brand pressure to use environmentally responsible materials with traceable sustainability credentials is mounting, Weig announces.
“The US is a highly attractive market with a stable economic foundation,” said Mike Petersen, Head of Weig Europack. “With this expansion, we are not only broadening our international presence but also creating valuable momentum for our innovation efforts in Europe.”
Weig operates two cartonboard mills with a total capacity of 550,000 tpy GD board and liner, and GT board. The company also has a carton production facility and its own recycling division.
