Significant Decrease in Italy's Toilet Paper Export

In September 2023, exports of toilet paper from Italy contracted to 10K tons, reducing by -5.8% compared with the month before. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 with an increase of 27% month-to-month. In value terms, toilet paper exports reduced to $23M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023.

Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 with an increase of 23% m-o-m.

Exports by Country
France (2.6K tons), Switzerland (2.3K tons) and Germany (1.9K tons) were the main destinations of toilet paper exports from Italy, together comprising 65% of total exports. From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Switzerland ($5.6M), France ($5.5M) and Germany ($3.7M) appeared to be the largest markets for toilet paper exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 64% share of total exports. Germany, with a CAGR of +5.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country
In September 2023, the toilet paper price amounted to $2,219 per ton (FOB, Italy), remaining constant against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 8.8% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $2,436 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Greece ($2,905 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($1,624 per ton) was amongst the lowest.


From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malta (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
