TAPPI’s Paper and Board Division is organizing an informational five-part webinar series, Molded Pulp, Chemical Aspects. The webinar series will focus on ways in which chemical additives can be used to enhance process efficiency, product attributes and other aspects of molded pulp manufacturing. Part 1: Retention and Uniformity

Attendees will understand motivations for using retention aids during the production of molded pulp items, as well as learn about different options for increasing retention of fine particles during the forming process.

Part 2: Fluid Holdout (Hydrophobic Sizing)

Attendees will learn the purpose of rosin and AKD sizing agents, as well as understand that pore size in the molded product will affect the rate of fluid uptake.

Part 3: Strength Attributes

Attendees will learn the role of strength additives such as starch products and glyoxylated polyacrylamide in achieving strength increases without significant increase in product density.

Part 4: Dewatering Challenges and Strategies

Attendees will learn how to overcome the effects of cellulosic fines in slowing down production rates of molded pulp items. Attendees will also understand the roles of retention aids, high-charge cationic additives, colloidal silica and enzymes in promoting dewatering.

Attendees will learn how to solve runnability problems by the usage of additives such as retention aids, detackifiers and release agents.

Meet the Presenter: Martin Hubbe

Martin Hubbe, born in the papermaking town of Millinocket, Maine, earned his master's degree at the Institute of Paper Chemistry (Appleton, WI, 1979), and a Ph.D. in chemistry at Clarkson University (Potsdam, NY, 1984). After a total of 15 years in corporate research (at American Cyanamid Corp., then International Paper), Hubbe joined North Carolina State University in 1998. As Professor and Buckman Distinguished Scientist, Hubbe teaches and conducts research related to the colloidal chemistry of cellulosic materials, with a particular focus on papermaking wet-end chemistry.

Hubbe has conducted research related to paper strength, electrokinetic tests, flocculation and dewatering. He also has chaired TAPPI’s “Introduction to Wet-End Chemistry” course and conducted university courses for on-campus students and distance education. The peer-reviewed scientific journal BioResources, which he co-founded and edited with Dr. Lucia, currently publishes more scientific articles than any other publication devoted to the materials science of paper and wood.
