Washer Optimization Reduces Mill Costs

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

With rising energy costs around the world, production efficiency in a complex industry such as pulp and paper is crucial to success.

Every element in the papermaking process is critical, and washing is no exception. Brownstock washing operations in pulp mill fiber lines has a significant impact on the mill’s energy economy, material efficiency and environmental emissions. By optimizing the operation parameters of the washers, a mill can increase washer efficiency and improve washing results.

This fall, attendees of TAPPI’s 2023 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference will have the opportunity to learn how an online efficiency calculation for DD-washers can substantially reduce water consumption and save on energy costs. Dr. Riku Kopra of South Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) will present The Effect of Optimizing the Operating Parameters of the Washers on the Washer’s Efficiency and the Overall Economy of the Mill as part of PEERS’ Pulping & Bleaching track. During his presentation, Kopra will share insights on a study to optimize the driving mode for DD-washers by experimenting with different feed and washing consistencies and monitoring the washer’s operation with real-time Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) measurements.

PEERS’ Pulping & Bleaching track focuses on new developments in raw materials, production and characterization of pulp. The track also presents methods and exemplary data for optimizing the pulping and bleaching process and addresses key issues in various unit operations. In addition to a Pine Chemicals Recovery panel discussion, attendees have the opportunity to attend one or more of the eleven expert-led presentations held within the following sessions:

  • Fiberline Optimization
  • Pulping and Fiber Properties
  • Improving the Carbon Footprint in Pulping and Bleaching
  • Miscellaneous: Pulping and Bleaching

PEERS 2023
PEERS, November 5-8, 2023 in Atlanta, GA, is considered the premier technical event focusing on the latest advances in technology, as well as fundamental process knowledge and control issues mills face each day. Its comprehensive technical program emphasizes new methods and best practices to help mills optimize operations and reach their sustainability goals. In addition to Pulping & Bleaching, program tracks include: Energy, Recovery, Lime Kiln and Recaust (ERLR); Engineering, Reliability, Corrosion & Materials (ERCM); Environmental; Recycling; Sustainability; and Nonwood.

With the theme, Sustainability – People, Process and Forest Products and Engineering & Technology Solutions for a Changing World, PEERS provides mills and other professionals the opportunity to learn from industry experts in a presentation setting, as well as engage in peer-to-peer discussions during panel sessions and committee meetings. The Conference also offers multiple networking events, a New Technology Showcase, and an exhibit floor where attendees can speak with suppliers about the latest technologies and solutions.

In addition, attendees are invited to attend the Poster Session on Tuesday, November 7th. This science-focused event highlights research projects of graduate and undergraduate students, as well as industry professionals. Topics range from advancements in the biomass and bioenergy industries to recent developments in pulping, recycling and sustainability. Students can also be part of the Student Poster Competition and have a chance to win a cash prize. Individuals who would like to participate should submit their 300 words or less abstract by August 21, 2023 to Pat Stiede, TAPPI Speaker Relations Manager.
