The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Senior TS&D Scientist/Application Technology Leader in the Paper Coatings segment, part of Dow Coating Materials (DCM) preferably located in Collegeville, PA or Midland, MI.

DCM provides innovative raw material technologies that help advance the performance and sustainability of a broad portfolio of polymeric binders, dispersants, rheology modifiers, surfactants, defoamers, and wetting agents for a wide variety of end markets, including architectural paints, traffic markings, industrial coatings, paper packaging, metal packaging, and performance additives.

DCM's product portfolio for paper packaging includes a range of products and chemistries used in coating systems for paper, paperboard, and specialty papers. The company offers a broad portfolio of technologies, such as POLYCO™ and RHOPLEX™ binders that are well-known in the paper industry and have earned a reputation for excellence. Their award-winning RHOBARR™ barrier coatings are enabling new advances in sustainable paper and fiber-based packaging with unique combinations of superior barrier performance, processability, and certified repulpability/recyclability.

Key Responsibilities

Drive technology implementation:

  • Identify and drive opportunities to deliver profitable business growth through the adoption and expansion of Dow’s products in strategic applications.
  • Provide hands-on collaborative technical support throughout customers’ development cycles and communicate effectively with current and potential customers on the use, handling, and management of Dow products.
  • Apply deep expertise in end-use applications, including formulation, coating processes, and article fabrication and evaluation, to help differentiate Dow and Dow technology from competitive offerings.
  • Generate scientific hypotheses that frame key questions associated with product development efforts and ensure that sound technical hypotheses, theory, and experimental design are used by all team members.
  • Apply a one-Dow mindset and seek opportunities to position cross-business Dow technology solutions to maximize probability of success and create value for Dow and the customer.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Chemistry, Engineering, Paper Science & Engineering, or a science related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in Paper and/or Packaging industry
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.  No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in Paper and/or Packaging industry
  • Customer / Market facing business experience and solid financial acumen
  • Established history of technology pipeline development
  • Experience in working effectively across functions and geographies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Broad knowledge of material science, formulations, and polymers
  • Broad knowledge of coating processes and fabrication equipment employed in the Paper and/or Packaging industries.
  • Successful track record of project leadership and new business growth
  • Willing to travel (~10 – 30%) for customer and/or internal meetings
