TAPPI Industry Career Center: InnoTech Alberta Seeks a Senior Technologist

The Bio Industrial Services Division at InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Senior Technologist to join their Pilot Facilities and Operations team to lead in the coordination and execution of projects within the Engineered Wood Composites area. The Senior Technologist will act as project manager to design and execute trials relevant to the Engineered Wood Composites pilot plant, participate within a larger team in the operation of this pilot plant and perform business development activities including the preparation of proposals for clients, and board production. It is expected that the candidate is proficient in the operation, configuration, and capabilities of the pilot and laboratory equipment within the engineered composite wood panel production facilities and a variety of related fibre processing equipment.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Work with various engineered composite client groups and the internal team to design engineered composite material production trials, material testing programs and lead and coordinate the execution of production trials
  • Participate in business development and engage stakeholders for new projects & initiatives
  • Utilize your technical knowledge while developing and guiding others
  • Utilize leadership and coaching skills and enjoy working in a team environment
  • Excel at project management and enjoy tackling new challenges

Reporting to the Manager of Bio Industrial Services - Pilot Facilities & Operations, the Senior Technologist will be accountable for, but not limited to, executing the following:

  • Conduct business development and engage stakeholders and clients for new projects & initiatives and ultimately identify, propose, and execute projects
  • Lead in the development of process procedures very specific to the clients’ requirements and in consultation with other senior technologists, researchers, and in certain situations direct interaction with the client.
  • Operate various process and mobile equipment (forklift), screening, blending, forming and weighing of materials for the Engineered Wood Composites plant as well as the fibre processing areas.
    Provide direction to technologists regarding operations, process improvements and equipment requirements
  • Plan and coordinate the execution of projects by preparing and updating the laboratory schedule and communicating the daily or weekly pilot plant activities to the team.
  • Identify and respond to the needs of clients, leading the direction of the work in the engineered composites field, and communicate results effectively
  • Improve the service area technical expertise & expand the area capabilities
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, and on budget within the pilot plant & testing services
  • Provides technical and scientific insight for clients and stakeholders
  • Assemble reports for clients using data produced from the pilot plan

Qualifications & Education:

  • A technical diploma or a degree in engineering or a wood-related science.
  • Eligible for registration with a professional designation associated with candidate’s education.
  • Minimum of eight years of forest product industry experience.
  • Direct experience in a wood panel board mill or other similar engineered composite production with working knowledge of wood products such as oriented strand board (OSB), medium- and high- density fibreboard (MDF/HDF), particleboard, and various wood laminate materials and the associated chemicals.
  • Experience with the testing methods from different standards organizations such as CSA, ASTM, ANSI, JAS, JIS, EN, CCMC.
  • Knowledge and experience in applied research would be considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, tasks (including budgets), resources, on a timely basis
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills are essential
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively lead others, coordinate and manage workflow and delegate tasks
  • Strong oral and written communications and the ability to produce technical presentations and reports
  • A valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to work sites as required
