TAPPI Industry Career Center: Michigan State University Seeks an Assistant Professor – Wood and Cellulosic-Based Packaging

The School of Packaging (SoP) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month tenure track Assistant Professor position with 50% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service assignment with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2022. 

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized multidisciplinary research program that builds collaboratively on MSU’s strengths, focusing on using cellulosic-based and wood materials to provide novel packaging with enhanced functionality and improved sustainability. The candidate will establish an innovative research program, secure competitive funding, publish in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and establish strong ties with the packaging and related industries. The candidate will also mentor undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. 

The School of Packaging is well known around the world for offering exemplary educational experiences in the science of packaging.  The candidate is expected to initially teach one core undergraduate course during the spring and fall semesters focused on cellulosic-based packaging such as paper, paperboard and corrugated board. It is also expected that the candidate will develop at least one graduate-level course related to cellulosic packaging materials based on their research and relevant industry advancements. The candidate may also be assigned to teach smaller elective classes and/or co-teach an existing class based on the school needs. The candidate will also have the opportunity to create and teach short courses for industry professionals and contribute to the growth of the school’s outreach program. 

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Experience working in research intensive, multidisciplinary environments
  2. Ability to secure competitive funding from government
  3. Ability to conduct both basic and applied research while addressing issues the packaging industry faces
  4. Knowledge of current and emerging needs of the wood and cellulosic-based packaging industry
  5. Ability to collaborate and attract industry sponsored research funds
  6. Evidence for the potential of developing a strong publication record
  7. Experience in mentoring and teaching
  8.  Interest in providing leadership and service in professional scientific associations
