2021 TAPPI NANO Webinar Series - Biomaterials and Bioethanol from Lignocelluloses – Webinar (Free)
Monday, August 23rd | 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM EST |

Industrial production of biomaterials and bioethanol from lignocelluloses such as corn cob and other cereal straws by a combination of hydrothermal pre-treatment and alkali post-treatment based on a biorefinery scenario performed at Shandong Longlive Bio-Technology Co., Ltd., since 2010 in China used 200 thousand corn cobs per year to produce 30 thousand tonnes of bioethanol, 10 thousand tonnes of xylo-oligosaccharides and 18 thousand tonnes of xylitol with a purity of more than 97%, as well as 300 tonnes of arabiose with a purity of more than 98.5%, and 20 thousand tonnes of lignin with a purity of more than 94% have been produced.  Lignin recovered as a by-product from the bioethanol production, was used to produce lignin-phenol-formaldehyde adhesives with a yield of about 50 thousand tons per year for commercial production of biocomposite boards for construction and furniture in China today. Another industrial utilization of the by-products of lignins from the bioethanol production and papermaking as rubbish bags in Shanghai city and agricultural mulching films on farms will be reported.

Grade Change Transition Performance and Troubleshooting – Webinar (Free)
Tuesday, August 31st | 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM EST |

Grade change transitions losses frequently appear in the top five quality impacts when reviewing paper machine performance. The demand to achieve quick and frequent grade transitions is a large contributor to the increased quality losses. Understanding the potential sources of these quality losses can be a very challenging process to go through and requires collaboration of different areas of the paper machine production, quality, and process control staff. With collaboration, relevant process data can be identified and collected to properly quantify grade change performance and provide a systematic approach to identify common quality issues during grade change. Using documented methods to quantify grade change performance can be used to point to areas that are under performing. By quantifying grade change transition performance, the financial benefits can also be more readily validated.
