A fire at Carthage Specialty Paperboard, West Carthage, N.Y., USA, sent six workers to be treated for smoke inhalation around 8 a.m. on Dec. 29, 2017, according to a report by the Watertown Daily News (WDN). The workers were checked out by an on-scene ambulance, and one was transported to the Carthage Area Hospital.for evaluation.

West Carthage Fire Chief Peter Crump Jr. said in the WDN report that mill employees had started to extinguish the fire before the fire department units arrived.

In a local TV report, Fox 28 noted that the building where the fire broke out was shut down for maintenance this week and firefighters believe that could be a factor. The fire, Fox 28 reported, started on the dryer end of a paper machine, and firefighters quickly contained it. There was some damage to the building, but the bulk of the damage was to the paper machine. The cause is still under investigation, and the extent of the damage has not yet been determined.
