This two-day course offers you a valuable overview of common additives used in the industry today.
 
You will discover:
  • The difference between acid and alkaline papermaking
  • Distinctions between process additives and product-improving additives
  • The basics of retention aid functionality variations between wet and dry strength additives
  • Foam control, pitch control, and biocides
  • The purpose and use of fillers.
This course uniquely features exercises on the UW- Stevens Point pilot paper machine where you will produce paper using different additives. Then, you'll evaluate the properties of your paper using typical laboratory tests during group sessions.

Your Expert Guide

Dr. Gerry Ring is well known in the industry, having authored 15 publications. He is currently Professor Emeritus of paper science and engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Dr. Ring began his professional career as a corporate research scientist after obtaining his Ph.D. at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wis.. He holds four patents, is a TAPPI Fellow, and a recipient of many awards for distinction.
