TAPPI Industry Career Center: GL&V Seeks Development Manager

As the Development Manager you will lead the development efforts for defined products and technologies in G&V’s Pulp & Paper group. You will assemble development project teams with the skills needed to execute development projects and manage the development projects from conception to commercial success.
 
The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in the manufacturing of machinery equipment.  To be successful in this role you will need to exhibit high level project management skills in addition to being mechanically and/or process oriented.
 
Duties include:
  • Secures outside resources to complement internal resources to execute projects on schedule.
  • Promote internally, and participate in optimizing, GL&V’s Development Process for best efficiency.
  • Act as the Development Ambassador in assigned technical centers to stimulate and promote a culture of Innovation in GL&V.
  • Solicit proposals for development projects to be undertaken by GL&V and work closely together with the Business Managers to prepare a business case for projects as well as a defined budget and project schedule.
  • In cooperation with the Business Unit design engineers, develop or participate in developing the basic design for upgrades to GL&V’s portfolio of products and/or new machine designs for machines needed to fill product line gaps and/or extend GL&V’s capabilities in target process technological areas.
  • Supervise the detailed design efforts and lead design reviews for upgrades or new machine designs.
  • Looks after development project schedules and budgets.
  • Work with customers, vendors, and alliance partners to implement new solutions in mill operations.
  • Lead and/or participate in commissioning and performance assessment of new developments in mill operations.
  • Perform investigative analysis of designs for improved performance, appearances, engineering concept and manufacturability for upgrades or new machines.
  • Travel to vendors, customers, alliance partners, and other GL&V locations and take necessary actions to execute development projects.
  • Works together with the business unit to participate in sales, project execution, and field start up and optimization activities for newly developed upgrades or new machines.
  • Monitor technical developments in key technical publications to identify future opportunities for growth of GL&Vs businesses.
  • Monitor activity in Research Institutions and Universities that can positively impact G&L&V’s current and future businesses. Serve as a technical and business liaison to targeted alliance partners.
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering and/or related degree; and more than ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated Project Management Skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge and experience in AutoCAD, Inventor, 3D modeling & FEA are a benefit.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external customers.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills desired.       Conversant in English required.
  • Conversant in French and/or Swedish is a benefit.
  • Capability to handle multiple and changing priorities.
