The TAPPI Community social networking site contains a blog this week titled Why Building a Better Manager Just Makes Sense. The Pöyry Point of View piece looks at the rapidly growing skills deficiency in North America brought on by accelerating retirement of key personnel in recent years. The massive loss of skilled talent is creating a "brain drain" situation in North American business and industry, including pulp and paper and its allied sectors. The resulting knowledge and skills gap between incoming recruits and outgoing talent is causing a serious dilemma for many companies today.

Although there is no magic solution to this problem, there is an option, Pöyry notes—building better managers. The article lays out a path involving promoting from within—developing the next generation of leaders by drawing on internal talent polls that already exist. Several approaches are discussed. To read this and other blogs on TAPPI Community, and to join in on conversation about the North American brain drain dilemma, visit TAPPI Community and become involved today.
