BillerudKorsnäs, Solna, Sweden, has launched a heavyweight semi-chemical fluting in 220 gsm. The new product is so strong that it can contribute to replace wood packaging, the company says.

Following market driven demands on strong containerboard materials for heavy-duty packaging, BillerudKorsnäs developed the heavyweight semi-chemical fluting at its mill in Gruvön, Sweden (photo). After extensive trials and evaluations, the company launched Billerud Flute 220 gsm this past month (September). As BillerudKorsnäs explains, the main reasons why companies are looking for a strong corrugated board instead of wood are:

  • The weight of the box is reduced dramatically, which facilitates logistics and handling, enabling freight costs reductions and less impact on the environment
  • The corrugated construction acts as a shock absorber for sensitive heavy duty products and thereby reduces the risk of damaging high value goods
  • Corrugated board is not affected by regulation concerning pest and insect damage on wood packaging
  • There are great opportunities to print attractive and decorative graphics on corrugated packaging.

The new grammage will also be able to contribute to lightweight corrugated solutions when replacing double wall or dual arch constructions with single wall solutions, the company adds.

"Thanks to this strong fluting, we can support brand owners in receiving safe and smart transport packaging solutions with less material usage, said Mikael Andersson, sales director, Containerboard, at BillerudKorsnäs.
