The Paperboard Packaging Alliance (PPA) recently announced the finalists of its 2025 Student Design Challenge. The Student Design Challenge is an annual competition where university students apply their talent and design skills to develop innovative, creative approaches to paper-based packaging in response to real-world customer needs and marketing scenarios.
Sylvamo has provided an update on a supply agreement it has with International Paper (IP) after IP announced plans to convert the No. 16 paper machine at its Riverdale mill in Selma, Alabama, to produce containerboard by the third quarter of 2026.
International Paper announced a series of strategic changes to achieve an advantaged cost position, deliver a superior customer experience and maintain a high relative supply position as part of its ongoing transformation journey.
According to local news reports, Domtar will indefinitely idle operations at its paper mill in Grenada, Mississippi, in September. The mill produces newsprint.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the July 2025 Printing-Writing Monthly report.
Swedish Mellanskog decreases the base price of hardwood pulpwood by 50 kr/m3fub to 580 kr/m3fub and fuelwood by 50 kr/m3fub to 500 kr/m3fub, effective August 20, 2025, company announced.
After prices for brown recycled corrugated case material in France had reversed in July, further price reductions were seen in August. Price declines are reported for both brown recycled grades and white-top testliner. 
Pulp & Paper

The Swedish Forest Agency reported that stocks of pulpwood and pulp chips continue to grow in 2025, while stocks of coniferous sawlogs remain at roughly the same level as at the same time last year.
Valmet will deliver an IntelliTissue 1600 tissue machine to PT Suparma Tbk’s mill in Surabaya, Indonesia. The new installation will enable production of high-quality tissue products for the Asia Pacific market and the start-up is planned for 2026.
Lindenmeyr Munroe, a leading independent paper, packaging, wide format, and facility solutions provider across North America, expands operations in the Michigan market with a Detroit-based distribution facility.
Valmet is to supply two fine papermaking lines with related automation systems and services to a customer in China. The papermaking lines will produce uncoated woodfree grades and start-ups are scheduled from late 2026 to early 2027. Valmet has previously delivered multiple other technologies such as complete paper and board making lines to the same customer.

In May 2025, Sappi North America and Valmet celebrated the successful start-up of the rebuilt paper machine 2 (PM2) at the Somerset paper manufacturing facility in Skowhegan, Maine, USA. The machine produced its first roll of solid bleached sulphate (SBS) board, marking a key milestone in Sappi’s strategic transition to packaging grades.

Nefab Group, through its subsidiary Nefab Denmark, has acquired privately owned FARUSA Emballage, a leading manufacturer in the Nordic region of heavy duty corrugated cardboard packaging.
Stora Enso held an inauguration ceremony for its new packaging board production line at its pulp and paper mill in Oulu, Finland. The new line was inaugurated by Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo; Chair of Stora Enso's Board of Directors Kari Jordan, President and CEO of Stora Enso Hans Sohlström, and Oulu mill's Chief Shop Steward Olli-Pekka Kaikkonen.

Mondi SCP is set to boost energy independence at its integrated pulp and paper mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia, with the construction of a new biomass power plant.

Georgia-Pacific is sharing the news today that Christian Fischer, president and CEO, announced he is retiring from the company at the end of October and will work to transition his responsibilities beginning in August. Christian joined Georgia-Pacific in 1989 and has held numerous leadership roles. He was named president and CEO in 2017.
