Mondi to Boost Energy Independence with New Biomass Facility
Mondi SCP is set to boost energy independence at its integrated pulp and paper mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia, with the construction of a new biomass power plant.
As already announced, the €150m modernisation package, which includes €30m in funding from the EU’s Modernisation Fund, will replace the site’s existing bark boiler. Commissioning is scheduled for 2027.
The new facility will raise the mill’s energy self-sufficiency from 75 to 90 per cent, providing a more sustainable and reliable energy supply for both the mill and the local community. Mondi SCP, which already supplies district heating in Ružomberok, will be able to expand supply without relying on natural gas.
The biomass power plant is designed to meet the strictest emission standards and is expected to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 50 per cent and particulate matter by up to 83 per cent compared to the old boiler, Mondi stated.
“By increasing energy self-sufficiency, the project provides long-term operational resilience and supply reliability, strengthening Mondi’s ability to deliver consistent, high-quality products for its customers while also enhancing cost competitiveness,” commented Joachim Grunewald, Managing Director of Mondi SCP.
Residual materials from pulp and paper production, such as bark, bio-sludge and paper rejects, will be used to generate energy, cutting landfill waste and increasing the use of renewable resources. All biomass is sourced from certified forests. Mondi says the improved environmental performance of the project will make an important contribution to its Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability commitments.
