Kruger has outlined an ambitious diversification program aimed at securing the long-term future of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited. The initiative, which hinges on timely support from key industry stakeholders, foresees an investment of up to $700 million to convert the existing mill into a state-of-the-art, sustainable manufacturing hub positioned among the most competitive in the sector.

The proposed development is designed to strengthen the provincial sawmill industry, enhance power generation for NL Hydro, and safeguard employment both at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper and across Newfoundland and Labrador’s forestry sector. In addition, the project is expected to generate a substantial number of jobs throughout the construction phase.

Kruger’s plan encompasses a wide range of upgrades, including the modernization of paper manufacturing operations, construction of a new pulp storage facility, and comprehensive enhancements to site infrastructure. The investment package also covers the installation of advanced chip handling and receiving systems, as well as a biomass unloading and drying facility to optimize the cogeneration plant. Upgrades to the Deer Lake and Watsons Pond hydro stations are part of the project to maximize their energy output, fostering growth and innovation within the regional forest and harvesting industries.

A significant component of the plan is the creation of a private wind farm dedicated to powering the upgraded mill complex, underlining the company’s focus on sustainable and renewable energy sources.

Kruger is currently engaged in discussions with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to finalize the framework of this comprehensive diversification strategy. Established in Montréal in 1904, Kruger Inc. is a leading producer of tissue products, 100% recycled containerboard, corrugated packaging, publication papers, specialty papers, pulp, and renewable energy solutions.
