Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

This month's DE&I committee article is co-published with the Community Outreach committee to bring attention to an important issue.

National Blood Donor Month was started in 1970. However, it was in the 1930s that Charles Richard Drew worked on the banking of blood products and the logistics of collecting and distributing the blood that saved countless lives in the trenches of World War II and in the wards of military and civilian hospitals. At the time, there was no national blood bank. The Red Cross enlisted Drew to start a pilot program, which included innovations such as community donation centers in storefronts, factories and bloodmobiles. The blood was processed in a single central laboratory under strict, uniform standards.

The MPI Potomac DE&I and Community Outreach committees ask chapter members to take part in National Blood Donor Month. Why? Read on to find out how this relates to the purpose and goals of our committees!

One of the biggest mistakes new managers can make is not engaging in so-called office politics. Understand that your work alone will not get you promoted. Your good work is not enough!

Every organization has some complex system of influence that requires employees to have political savviness and skill to navigate for positive impact and work effectiveness. This skill could help to increase power, sell ideas or advance a career. These skills require social intelligence, which is a blind spot for many emerging leaders who are inclined to concentrate on performance or developing technical and management skills instead. Recognizing the need to develop and utilize these competencies in the office environment could potentially make or break your career. Therefore, career success and advancement require engaging in office politics.
