As the science around climate change evolves, we are learning more and more that the small changes we make in how we live our daily lives, do our business, and produce meetings and events, can make a lasting difference.

Most recently, we are learning ways of how we can be more sustainable for the environment.  We need to reduce waste, energy consumption and carbon emissions.  The meetings and events industry needs to encourage efficient use of its resources.

Planners and suppliers are learning and adopting sustainability practices to help mitigate the environmental impact and help contribute to a more sustainable future.

Not only are sustainability practices good for the environment, but they also have an economic impact and social impact.  Sustainable practices often go hand in hand with cost savings. By optimizing resource usage, reducing waste, and adopting energy-efficient technologies, the industry can achieve operational efficiencies and lower costs. For example, using renewable energy sources, implementing smart energy management systems, or adopting digital solutions can lead to long-term cost savings.

Our industry has a social responsibility to consider the well-being of local communities and stakeholders. Sustainable practices can contribute to the social and economic development of host destinations by supporting local businesses, promoting fair trade and minimizing negative social impacts such as displacement or exploitation.

Embracing sustainability helps challenge the meetings and events industry to seek innovative solutions and explore new technologies. By integrating sustainable practices, businesses can differentiate themselves from competitors, attract environmentally conscious clients and gain a competitive edge in the market.

So, what can planners do?
  1. Reduce useless swag with sustainable items.
  2. Source locally– printing/swag/photographer.
  3. Minimize shipping costs by using local vendors/printers who are best for the planet.
  4. Replace printed materials with digital apps.
  5. Replace fireworks with drone shows.
  6. Serve sustainable food items, especially seafood.
  7. Share your sustainability practices with your colleagues!
