COMING SOON! Delegate registrations will soon be open on our website for our 2023 Fall Conference, "Come Back to Get Ahead", to be held at the Hilton - Mississauga/Meadowvale on Monday, October 16.

OSCA/ACOSO is thrilled to be returning to our first In-Person event since 2019. Join over 300 other Guidance Counsellors and Career Educators from across the province as we network, learn, and grow together!

OSCA subscriptions are now open for renewal on the OSCA website. If you plan to renew your individual subscription, please check with your board lead first to see if your board will be purchasing subscriptions for 2023-2023. Please note, that once an individual pays for their individual subscription, there are no refunds. Board leads are encouraged to renew their board subscriptions at this time as well. Once a board lead pays on the website, a receipt will be automatically generated back containing the payment code that can be shared with board colleagues renewing. Remember that the person paying with the credit card, is known as the 'parent' and will be included in the number of subscriptions purchased. Thank you to those boards that have renewed thus far! Any questions may be sent to oscadesk@gmail.com.

Subscription Fees for 2023 -2024 are:
Statutory $55 plus HST/person
Board Sponsored Subscriptions $45 plus HST /person.

If you’re transitioning from high school to college, you may find there are some big differences that can catch you off guard. That’s why we’ve pulled together a list of these differences, along with some tips to help you get ahead and succeed in your new environment. Below, we’ll discuss the in-class differences between high school and college.

First things first: There’s no magic formula for success at college. While we hope you consider the tips we’ve outlined here, every learner is different, so you’ll need to determine the strategies that work best for you.

To support Indigenous clients in their career path, career practitioners must take a holistic approach that considers the individual’s lived experiences as well as historical factors that shaped their education and employment. Here are resources that explore Indigenous worldviews on careers and today’s labour market.

Education

CNN — Like many adults, a lot of teenagers don’t know what they want to do when they grow up.

Even when they think they do, they may not have a realistic grasp of whether a given occupation or job is likely to be economically viable for them over time. For instance, does it pay well? Is it a growing field or a shrinking one? Is it likely to fall victim to artificial intelligence? Just how many years do you need to spend in school to land a spot?

While many resources currently available may get at one or two of those factors, teens will now have access to an interactive tool that takes a measure of all of them.

The Careers of the Future Index (along with an accompanying report and public database) is intended to help educate not only them, but their school guidance counselors, parents and really anyone who is curious about getting into different fields.

Now is the time to nominate a deserving colleague for an OSCA award. Perhaps it is that person who has created a great resource that has allowed students to create their own pathway? Maybe you know a guidance counsellor who is the ''go-to'' person at your school? Perhaps a deserving community partner that provides excellent support for your school?

You have until September 18, 2023 11:59 p.m. to nominate someone, but why not do it now?

We have come this far and we are almost there! June has begun and we are now in the final stretch of the 2022-2023 school year! Once the hurdles of scheduling, graduations and end-of-year field trips have been completed, all are hoped to have a well and much deserved break from the demands of our classrooms and offices.

Food for thought as you may have some downtime to slow down and think about what's to come:

- Look forward to our in-person conference in October!
- Peruse the OSCA/ACOSO website!
- Consider becoming a member of our Board of Directors
- Reflect on your colleagues and the role they've played in Guidance and Careers Studies in consideration of the many Teacher Awards of recognition

Most of all, relax and enjoy your time away from rigorous routines! Happy Summer!
