My name is Marie Moftah. I have been with OSCA/ACOSO since 2018. I served as vice president of the Governance Committee in 2020 and 2021. I have worked as a guidance counselor at Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir since 2014. I just started a new position as board lead in guidance and Aspen within this same school board.

Teaching, which I hold close to my heart, is not my first career. I began my professional life as an assistant lecturer at Alexandria University, where I worked my way up to the position of university professor. In love with scientific research, I toured the neuroscience laboratories at several European and American universities until arriving in Toronto, where I took an interest in behavioral neuroscience and children’s learning as well as young adult learning.

My studies have shown that a large part of children’s education relies on their support network and environment. This is the reason why I joined OSCA/ACOSO. In my current role in this association, we try as a team to train guidance counselors so that they can ensure a supportive learning environment for students in Ontario.

Education
"Tell me about yourself."

Whenever I hear those four words, my brain flatlines. I scramble for an answer and wonder if there’s anything interesting to say at all. Without exception, my response is the same: every time I’m asked to describe my life, I describe my job.

Work has always anchored my identity. It was the engine that propelled my family from China to Canada in 1998, two years before I was born, and tales of my father’s heroic work ethic and self-sacrifice have played for years like a movie montage in my mind. There he is, waiting at a bus stop in suburban Toronto, starting his 90-minute commute to an IT job downtown. There he is, hunched in a chair at the Chapters bookstore near our home, poring over volumes about computer coding. There he is in our living room, where I’m lying on the couch as he paces with a book in hand, mumbling new English words to himself. "Dexterity," he says. "Dexterity, dexterity, dexterity."
