Guest Speakers from Tendril Studios

River

Tendril Studios is a design-driven animation, vfx, and digital innovation studio creating beautiful and thoughtful visuals across all mediums. We have an awesome community outreach program where we look to engage with young, up-and-coming artists to give them an idea of the kind of work we do and how someone could develop a career in our field. Our virtual presentation doesn't cost anything, as we're only looking to give back and help foster creative talent! The whole presentation and chat will be about 60 minutes, we'll talk about what we do and then a few of our artists will talk about what they thought their careers would look like, and the actual work they do at Tendril. Considering classrooms are virtual right now, it could certainly fit into a number of curricula, as well as a virtual career day!

Please follow the link to our website so you can get a better sense of the work that we do, and how an informative, inclusive talk might benefit the students you work with: https://tendril.ca/

Education in Ontario. It has been an unprecedented year riddled with never-before-seen challenges and relentless change. The context of the pandemic has brought about needs and disruptions in Guidance and Career Education work; needs and challenges that are uncharted. In many ways, we are planning for the unplanned and tasked with forging new paths forward.

OSCA-ACOSO Anthony Di Lena Student Pathway Awards' mandate is to assist at-risk students in their journey towards success. One of the most important ways this is accomplished is by providing the OSCA-ACOSO Anthony Di Lena Student Pathways Awards to at-risk students who have demonstrated the exemplary ability to succeed in the face of adversity. $500.00 awards are presented to students who, in their postsecondary pursuits, are taking a pathway to apprenticeship, college, university or workplace.

One of the most important mandates is to provide scholarships to exemplary at-risk students for post-secondary education or vocational training.

Nomination Deadline is May 28, 2021

Resources
The learning experiences in this lesson series will complement the learning expectations found in the Self-Regulation and Well-Being Frame of the Kindergarten Program. Social-Emotional Learning skills help students develop the skills to foster overall health and well-being, positive mental health, and the ability to learn, build resilience and thrive.

By demonstrating a range of stress management strategies, students will have more options and ideas for staying mentally well during difficult times. It is important to note that different strategies work for different individuals. Sharing a range of strategies over time will allow students the opportunity to try them out and determine what works for them.

In the summer of 2015, Shanice Nicole wrote a "love letter to Black girls" in the form of a poem titled "Dear Black Girls." Now she is reintroducing the poem as a children’s book that will be released on Feb. 8.

Nicole transformed the poem into a book in collaboration with illustrator Kezna Dalz and Metonymy Press. The Montreal publishing company’s website reminds readers that "to be a Black girl is a true gift."

Nicole is a Montreal-based educator, facilitator, writer, and as she claims in her online biographies, an "(out)spoken word artist."
With COVID-19 restrictions in place across the province, Skills Ontario has made the decision to deliver our annual Skills Ontario Competition and Career Exploration Showcase in a virtual format. It is important to Skills Ontario to work with our partners as well as Ontario students to give them a chance to connect and explore the many opportunities that exist in skilled trade and technology careers.

The event will be run on the VFairs platform from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm (EST) and will be set up to replicate the experience of the Toronto Congress Center event as closely as possible, but without the need to travel! Students will have the opportunity to view competitions, join conferences and explore potential career opportunities with Skills Ontario partners!

The field of computing has expanded rapidly over the past 10-15 years, and students need better information about the field and its related careers. In reality, there is no single computing discipline but at least five. Including different sub-specialties, there are dozens of possible computing educational paths for prospective students.
The second edition of this guide (2020), produced by Mount Royal University and funded by CERIC, answers these three questions.

- Why should you consider computing when choosing a career?
- What kind of computing jobs are out there?
- What kind of education pathways will guide you to the computing career you desire?

The guide outlines the five distinct computing disciplines identified by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and how the disciplines relate to specific job titles and tasks. Listings of core courses, sample degrees and other pathways at Canadian colleges and universities are also provided for each discipline. The five computing disciplines are:

- Computer science
- Computer engineering
- Information systems
- Information technology
- Software engineering

The guide is designed to support prospective students, career practitioners, academic advisors and career counsellors by outlining these five areas of practice. This information will help students to better understand what each one of the computing disciplines does and which best suits their interests, talents, skills and abilities. This is expected to inform their choice of education program and major selection.

Parental alienation sometimes occurs when parents engage in a high-conflict separation or divorce. Parental alienation means that the child has become enmeshed with one parent (the preferred parent) and has rejected a relationship with the other parent (the target parent) without legitimate justification.

Parental alienation is the term used when a child unreasonably rejects one parent as the result of conscious or unconscious negative influence by another. The alienating parent cultivates an attitude of obsessive hostility in the child towards the alienated parent. The hatred the child holds towards the alienated parent usually extends to that parent's entire family, often negating any positive benefits from being part of the extended family. In relationship breakdowns that involve infidelity or does not end mutually, one parent frequently uses the child as a weapon to hurt the other parent.

When it comes to traditional measures of success in school, some of the common yardsticks that are used include things like aptitude and IQ tests. Indeed, measures of perseverance and success have often been attributed mainly to cognitive factors such as intelligence and academic abilities. As such, students are gauged by how well they perform in testing, or the level of detail and analysis they can provide in their assignments. Although certainly important in helping to forecast students’ academic abilities and eventual success, research into other factors that are different in nature – namely non-cognitive ones –are gaining traction. Non-cognitive factors have shown promise in determining how well a student prepares, adapts and succeeds in the transition from high school to post-secondary.

pandemic, we would love to hear from you. We would love it if you would write an article for
OSCA Today.
