Did you know that for the past two years, students have named guidance counsellors as the second most likely source of information about the Loran Award. This shows how crucial you are to encouraging applicants! Loran relies on you to identify these amazing young people, help them recognize their own potential, and guide them to apply for this transformative opportunity.

We offer exchanges year-round; however, we're aiming for an October 31st deadline for new Youth Exchange applications to help our current applicants in our pool who haven't found their exchange 'twin' yet. We have 30+ 'untwinned' groups, with a large majority of groups who wish to go on ESL/FSL themed-exchanges, Indigenous cultural exchanges, and more general history/geography-themed exchanges. The group organizers of these exchanges are typically teachers, but coaches, choir conductors, scout/girl guide leaders, community organization volunteers, etc., are all eligible to lead a group of 10-60 youth on an exchange with FREE TRAVEL for all Canadian youth aged 12-17 and their chaperones to explore a new province or territory. This is a government-supported program that funds travel for youth to connect with one another from coast-to-coast-to-coast while discovering Canadian heritage, history, culture, and languages. This is the perfect opportunity for youth to gain experiential learning by visiting museums and art galleries, historical and geographical landmarks, and local restaurants and shops, all while making lifelong friendships.

For decades, career development leaders have pointed out that students thrive when career learning is woven into their daily lives – not bolted on. The OECD (2020) confirms that even small, early engagements in career conversations predict higher levels of career readiness and eventual employment outcomes. CERIC (2020) emphasizes the same point: career development is not only about employability, but about student well-being and agency.

Canada is embarking on a major economic pivot, and the country’s colleges and universities need to be a key driver in that transformation. The postsecondary system has long been an important part of the Canadian identity. It has driven discoveries, delivered accessible, quality education, and provided economic anchor institutions in communities across the country, underpinning progress and prosperity. But the sector is not as strong as it once was, and its role in building Canada’s future is under threat. Many colleges and universities are financially unstable, and the sector is often perceived as unresponsive to economic needs; these issues are mutually reinforcing. Postsecondary institutions across Canada are closing programs and campuses and reducing staff to bring temporary budgetary relief. But broader policy and funding changes are needed to ensure the sector’s sustainability. Like the country’s economy, postsecondary needs to pivot.
