What our students are saying…
“This AQ Part 1 course is my favorite AQ course so far. The live classes with role-playing set this course apart; my co-workers who have done this course did not have an opportunity to do this in their virtual courses. Angela has been an amazing instructor—her kindness, calmness, and clarity are conveyed in her lessons and messages and reminds me of how an experienced guidance teacher/counselor should be like. Thank you for a great course! I am looking forward to taking part 2 soon.”

“Angela is an excellent teacher. She is very knowledgeable and adapts to the group. It is my second time taking a class with her. I find her content relevant and interesting. She is very respectful of our own knowledge and time, making her Live Classes exactly 1 hour so it is easy to plan around, and the discussions were enriching.”

Post Secondary Information

Humber Polytechnic has launched its Exploratory Pathways Programs to support students who have completed workplace-level high school courses—students often underserved in post-secondary planning. One key offering, the General Arts and Science – College Transfer Certificate (09181), is open to students with OLC4O or ENG4E as their Grade 12 English credit.

Humber is one of the only colleges in the GTA offering a dedicated academic pathway for these learners, helping them build foundational skills, earn transfer credits, and explore future career and program options in a supportive environment.

Educators and guidance staff can learn more in an upcoming webinar focused on how to connect students with these inclusive, future-focused opportunities.

What are the impacts of a purposeful gap year?

How do our students experience growth, self-discovery, and community throughout their gap year? The best people to answer these questions are none other than our students themselves!

“I can vividly remember the moment I started saying “yes” again. It was the Discover Year Orientation Week, and all new students were in the Byward Market in Ottawa, nervously yet excitedly getting to know one another. The sun was shining, and that early September day felt much more like summer than fall.”

Education
The underemployment of recent post-secondary graduates remains a persistent and serious issue in both Canada and the United States. Underemployment refers to the situation in which individuals with a bachelor’s degree are employed in positions that do not require that level of training, skill, or credential (Hanson et al., 2024). It also includes part-time workers who would prefer full-time employment (Macdonald, 2019), a common circumstance for many recent graduates. Career development educators occupy important roles in addressing college underemployment (Buford & Stebleton, 2025).

In Canada, underemployment has been a recurring theme over the past five decades of higher education research (Holmes, 2021). Statistics Canada’s 2025 National Graduates Survey reported that 41.2% of bachelor’s degree holders were underemployed, meaning they were employed in roles that typically do not require that level of education. Alarmingly, the rate for international graduates was even higher, reaching 63.4%.

Indigenous populations are the fastest growing in Canada, and First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth contribute significantly to the labour market. However, gaps in labour market outcomes with non-Indigenous youth remain, with Indigenous youth facing higher levels of unemployment.

Career professionals and educators can support Indigenous youth on their educational and employment journeys by connecting them to the many resources available across the country, including the organizations and programs detailed below.

Unemployment was up for the second straight month in Canada and has reached the highest level since 2016 outside of the pandemic years, according to new data.

"Well, here’s a hit we’ve all been anticipating. The impact of tariffs and economic disruption is starting to show, and the numbers are worrying," says economist Anupriya Gangopadhyay at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

"Canada’s August Labour Force release makes it clear...and the warning lights are flashing."

Statistics Canada reported on Friday that in August, the national unemployment rate climbed to 7.1 percent from 6.9 percent in July.
