OSR Legalities and Best Practices

The Ontario Student Record (OSR) is the official, confidential record of a student's educational progress in Ontario, governed by the Education Act and MFIPPA, with its contents protected by privacy legislation. Having a thorough understanding of the best practices involved in maintaining the OSR is a key component of the Guidance role and involves adherence to the Education Act, MFIPPA, Ontario Human Rights Code, and other relevant legislation. Presented by a practicing education lawyer, this 60-minute session will review the legal framework governing access and disclosure of the Ontario Student Record (OSR), including consent requirements and privacy obligations. Start the school year with this important webinar that will enhance the toolkits of both new and seasoned Guidance Teacher-Counsellors. Register Here!

"CAPTURING THE STUDENT VOICE©" is an electronic journal that includes success stories written by students from across Ontario who participated in the Cooperative Education program and other forms of Experiential Learning (OYAP, SHSM, etc.) in their high school. These stories describe their placement experience, the tasks they had to complete, challenges overcome, and the benefits they derived. Ces histoires décrivent leur expérience de stage, les tâches qu’ils ont eues à compléter, les défis surmontés ainsi que les avantages qu’ils en ont retirés. When entering the workforce for the first time as a teenager, you experience a predicament whereby employers will only hire you if you have work experience, but unfortunately, you can’t get work experience unless someone takes a chance on you. However, curating an effective resume will help make that first job more attainable. The following article highlights tips, tools, and templates for resume development that can be used by high school students and those who support them.

Career education often aims to equip students with the tools to succeed, such as resumes that shine, interview tips that impress, and pathways that promise upward mobility. But in a world where uncertainty is the only constant, focusing exclusively on "success" does students a disservice. To truly prepare young people for the realities of work and life, career education must also include open, honest conversations about failure.

In my role as a career practitioner working with newcomers to Canada, it’s essential for me to look at a client’s situation full circle, seeing them as a whole person and considering how their life circumstances are preventing them from taking steps forward to reach their goals. This approach is what has allowed me to help others find their path.
