Why, the most urgent labour market problem might not be a shortage at all.
For decades, we’ve been talking about skills shortages. Every few years, a new wave of urgency hits amid headlines warning of a widening gap between what workers offer and what employers need. And every time, the solutions sound familiar: upskilling, better training pipelines, and improved career mobility. But after six years of working in labour market research and workforce development, I’ve started to ask a different question: Are we diagnosing the right problem?
Traditional labour market forecasts often focus only on the skills tied to a worker’s current occupation. But workers bring with them a wide range of skills from previous jobs, education, and life experiences. The Conference Board of Canada, in collaboration with the Future Skills Centre, is developing a new skill forecasting model that better captures these broader career pathways. We are inviting career development professionals to help validate and improve this model through a one-hour focus group session. ![]()
