Summer Session: July 3-31, 2024

OSCA-ACOSO is pleased to announce that they will continue to offer Part 1, Part 2 and the Specialist in Guidance and Career Education Additional Qualifications courses this summer. Additional sessions will take place in the fall and winter. Advantages of taking the course with OSCA are the instructor is a current guidance teacher-counsellor, a one year OSCA subscription is included ($55 value if currently not active) and a downloaded copy of Ethical Guidelines ($25) is included. As part of the OSCA subscription, participants have the opportunity to attend the fall conference at a member rate, gain access to webinars throughout the year on topics related to guidance and career education, receive the weekly OSCA News to keep up to date with guidance/career topics, and receive the tri-annual OSCA Today, the professional magazine of the association.

Cambrian College is proud to partner with the Schulich Foundation to award Schulich Builders scholarships to students enrolling in eligible full-time skilled trades certificate and diploma programs.

The scholarships are valued at up to $40,000 ($20,000 per academic year) and support the cost of tuition, living expenses, and tools.

OPAF has established a fund to provide financial support to our future professionals through bursaries and scholarships for educational purposes.

Each year a total of up to five bursaries of $2,000 each and three scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each are awarded to qualified students who meet the requirements of application. Applicants are students pursuing post-secondary studies in parks, forestry, horticulture, landscaping, conservation, or an environmental resource management field, and whose goals are aligned with those of the Foundation and the Ontario Parks Association:

The OUF is one of the largest educational fairs in North America. This event allows students to gather information and chat one-on-one with representatives from Ontario's universities.

With nearly 42% of the Canadian workforce needing to reskill by 2026 to adapt to AI, the urgency to address these issues has never been more critical. This webinar aims to foster dialogue on how AI is reshaping work landscapes and what it means for skills development across industries.

A new Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario brief indicates that as public health measures relaxed, so too did some uncertainties and stressors facing students navigating post-secondary education. However, concerns remain about learning loss, students’ sense of academic preparedness, self-efficacy, satisfaction and well-being.

The COVID-19 pandemic had profound effects on many aspects of employment. ERS conducted a study to examine the impact of the pandemic on the soft skills of people seeking employment through workforce development agencies and non-profit organizations. Specifically, we assessed the changes in soft skills before, during and after the pandemic using the Employment Readiness Scale (ERS), an online self-assessment tool that measures soft skills, employability factors and challenges.

Using ERS data over a five-year span, we gained interesting insights into the long-term effects of the pandemic on employment-related skills.

Hon. David Piccini, Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, held a press conference at Landscape Ontario’s head office in Milton, Ont., on April 17 announcing an investment through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) toward three free training projects in Milton.

This fund will help more than 700 workers and job seekers prepare for in-demand and rewarding careers in the skilled trades.

Landscape Ontario is proud and honoured to be among these three projects and to receive funding for the GROW and Apprenticeship training programs to attract, recruit, and train new and young workers in the landscape and horticultural sector.

Since 2022, the GROW and Apprenticeship programs have prepared 298 people for rewarding careers in horticulture and landscaping.

For students, more encounters with the world of work raise aspirations and broaden horizons. How do we do this in a fun and exciting way for students?

As a District Career Education Coordinator, I have been trying to increase career exposure for students while making the career encounters engaging and fun. I’ve been targeting Grade seven students across School District No. 73 Kamloops – Thompson with an event that I call "Who Am I?," adapted from the "What’s My Line?" concept from the UK-based organization Education and Employers. This project was launched in British Columbia and commissioned by provincial Ministry of Education and Childcare. I was lucky to get to pilot it in two K-7 elementary schools.

I have been hosting a monthly Who Am I? event and have found an unexpected outcome has been the excitement generated by teachers, as there are clear links between learning and career development. Students get very excited too when they can guess the jobs and when they get to see the hands-on career tools guests bring.

Happy spring! I am Tania Carducci, honoured to continue to serve as Director of Governance on the OSCA/ACOSO. Over the last three years, it has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside a team of dedicated guidance teacher-counsellors that continue to set the standard for excellence in Guidance and Career Education across the province. 

My educational background includes an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Education from OISE - University of Toronto and a Master of Science in Education with a focus on Administration and Supervision from the University of Niagara.

Over the last 23 years as an educator, I have been privileged to work with students and staff in a variety of educational settings at the secondary level. Currently, I am in the second year of serving as the Secondary Lead for Guidance and Career Education with the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

As the OSCA/ACOSO Board, we continue to build strong relationships and foster collaboration with important educational partners that support all of our students.  I have represented OSCA on; the Ontario Universities’ Council on Admissions (OUCA), the OCAS Guidance Counsellor Focus Group, the Ontario Universities’ Info Editorial Board (OUInfo) as well as the Teacher Education Advisory Committee (TEAC) for the OSCA additional qualification courses in Guidance and Career Education. 

As guidance teacher-counsellors, we are constantly learning and striving to best support the changing needs and well-being of the students we serve in our diverse school communities. 

As a firm believer in continuous growth, I invite you to seek out professional development offered through OSCA/ACOSO. From monthly webinars and AQ courses, to the highly anticipated fall conference, The Future is NOW - Embrace the CHANGE, join us in November to take the learning back to your schools to support your students.

Vive le printemps ! Je m’appelle Tania Carducci et je suis honorée de continuer à siéger en tant que directrice du comité de la gouvernance de l’OSCA/ACOSO. Au cours des trois dernières années, ce fut un plaisir de travailler avec une équipe d’enseignants-conseillers en orientation dévouée qui continue d’établir les normes d’excellence dans le domaine de l’orientation et de la formation au cheminement de carrière dans toute la province.

Mon parcours scolaire comprend l’obtention d’un baccalauréat en arts spécialisé de l’Université de Toronto, un baccalauréat en éducation de l’IEPO de l’Université de Toronto et une maîtrise en sciences de l’éducation avec concentration en administration et supervision de l’University of Niagara (université de Niagara).

Au cours de mes 23 dernières années dans le monde de l’éducation, j’ai eu la chance de travailler avec des élèves et du personnel dans divers contextes éducatifs au niveau secondaire. Actuellement, j’en suis à ma deuxième année en tant que responsable de l’orientation et de la formation au cheminement de carrière au niveau secondaire au sein du Toronto Catholic District School Board (conseil scolaire catholique du district de Toronto).

Le conseil d’administration de l’OSCA/ACOSO continue à tisser des liens solides et favoriser la collaboration avec d’importants partenaires éducatifs qui soutiennent tous nos élèves. J’ai représenté l’OSCA/ACOSO au sein de; l’OUCA (Ontario Universities’ Council on Admissions), du groupe de discussion des conseillers en orientation du SACO, du comité éditorial d’Info des universités de l’Ontario (Info-UO) ainsi qu’au comité consultatif de la formation des enseignants pour les cours menant à la qualification additionnelle en orientation et formation au cheminement de carrière offerts par l’OSCA/ACOSO.

En tant qu’enseignants-conseillers en orientation, nous apprenons constamment et nous nous efforçons de bien répondre aux besoins changeants et d’assurer le bien-être des élèves dans nos diverses communautés scolaires. Je crois fermement en l’importance de la croissance continue et je vous invite donc à profiter des occasions de perfectionnement professionnel offertes par l’OSCA/ACOSO. Nous offrons des webinaires mensuels, des cours de QA et bien sûr, la très attendue conférence d’automne, « L’avenir, c’est maintenant – Accueillir le changement ». Participez à cette conférence en novembre afin d’approfondir vos connaissances, ce qui nous permettra tous de mieux appuyer nos élèves.
