ASCO’s Board of Directors, invited guests and staff gathered in Washington, D.C., for the Summer Board of Directors meeting as well as the Annual Meeting.

The ASCO Student Affairs and Admissions Professional Group (SAAs) met at the Southern College of Optometry on June 26-27. They discussed a variety of issues, including holistic admissions, student orientation, and held an OptomCAS WebAdMIT training session. The SAAs also enjoyed an evening networking reception at the Majestic Grille in downtown Memphis.

ASCO staff was busy in June and July promoting the new Eye Opener Sessions Program, in addition to the Optometry Gives Me Life (OGML) public awareness campaign at both the American Optometry Association’s (AOA) Optometry Meeting in Washington, DC and the National Optometric Association (NOA) meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The staff gave away OGML t-shirts at both conferences to optometrists and optometry students.

Congratulations to The Ohio State University College of Optometry’s Dr. Karla Zadnik, for being named Dean of the Year by the National Optometric Association (NOA). Dean Zadnik was chosen because of her ongoing support of the NOA and for her commitment to advance the visual health of minority populations.

Timothy A. Wingert, OD, FAAO, retired dean and professor of the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO), has been selected to receive the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) - Essilor Award for Outstanding International Contributions to Optometry for 2023.

Midwestern University held its fifth annual Summer Eye Experience (SEE) program offered by the Chicago College of Optometry (CCO). During the course of the program, students gained exposure to the Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, learned about an optometry career via workshops, prepared for admission with their application portfolio, experienced laboratories to learn optometric skills, and viewed a day in the life of an optometry student.

Prevent Blindness, the nation’s leading eye health and safety organization, has announced the recipient of the 2023 Jenny Pomeroy Award for Excellence in Vision and Public Health as Dean A. VanNasdale, Jr., OD, PhD, Associate Professor at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. He received his award during the 12th Annual Prevent Blindness Focus on Eye Health Summit, held virtually July 12-13, 2023.

Among the many hardworking, dedicated, and exceptional students within the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science Class of 2023, one particular graduate has stood out due to his many achievements and professional reputation at Berkeley: Dr. Graham K. Chung.

Terri Call, OD, was first author of a paper titled Real-Time Ocular Comfort Reporting in Monthly Replacement Contact Lens Wearers. The featured research is the first study to describe real-time contact lens comfort over the life of a monthly replacement contact lens.
