FYidoctors Summer Student Program Offers Early Exposure to Clinical Optometry

This summer, optometry students from across Canada and the U.S. participated in the FYidoctors / Visique Summer Student Program—an immersive, paid opportunity that introduces students to real-world clinical practice while building essential professional and leadership skills. This year, we proudly supported over 85 OD students across more than 70 clinics nationwide.

The program is open to pre-optometry, OD1, and OD2 students and provides a structured opportunity to explore the many roles within a clinical setting. Students rotate through areas such as reception, pre-testing, the optical showroom, and patient education, gaining first-hand insight into patient care and team-based practice.

In addition to in-clinic learning, students also benefit from a range of enrichment activities including:

• E-learning modules delivered through UKG to support clinical understanding and personal development
• Weekly FYinsights presentations led by practicing optometrists and subject-matter experts
• Bi-weekly social hours designed to foster peer connections and team engagement
• A national social media challenge to share learning moments, encourage reflection, and build community across clinics

A distinguishing aspect of the program is its flexibility. Whether a student is available for one week or a full 12-week placement, FYidoctors / Visique is committed to delivering a consistent and meaningful experience. All participants receive structured onboarding, dedicated mentorship, and the opportunity to build clinical confidence early in their careers. Great news: next year, FYi will be offering up to 16 weeks!

The Summer Student Program continues to grow each year, with participation expanding across provinces—and plans to welcome students in California in the near future.
