Research Awards to Optometry Schools and Colleges Increase 5.3%

Direct costs awarded from July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023 for research at ASCO member institutions rose 5.3% to nearly $40 million, according to ASCO’s 2022-23 Research Survey Report. $21.3 million came from the National Eye Institute (up from $20.7 million), $12 million from the industry (up from $9.9 million), and $2.7 million from private foundations (up from $2 million.) Approximately $16 million in direct costs was awarded for research in basic science (about equal to the previous year), $9.7 million for research in clinical science ($9.5 million), and $12.8 million for research in translational science ($11 million).

The complete report was distributed to the ASCO Board of Directors in January and includes total awards by school and information about faculty and facilities devoted to research.
