Steele Retires After 53 Years
Southern College of Optometry’s longest-serving faculty member, Dr. Glen Steele, recently announced his retirement in August. Dr. Steele joined SCO’s faculty following his graduation in 1969. At 53 years, his service is the longest of any employee in SCO history.
In 1970, Dr. Steele attended a year-long fellowship program at the Gesell Institute of Child Development at Yale University, where he developed an interest in pediatric vision. He later became SCO’s Chief of Vision Therapy and served as the first Pediatrics Chief when The Eye Center at SCO opened in 2002.
In 2005, he was one of the chief founders of the InfantSEE Program through Optometry Cares –The AOA Foundation. Earlier this year he received the 2022 Dr. W. David Sullins, Jr. InfantSEE Award presented by the AOA InfantSEE and Children’s Vision Committee, one of numerous accolades and awards he’s received through the years.
Dr. Steele is pictured with his wife, Brenda, in front of a suite bearing their name at The Eye Center at Southern College of Optometry. A scholarship also honors Dr. Steele and his late colleague and classmate, Dr. Al Fors.
He plans to travel and relax in his retirement, but he also will continue to lecture and plans to consult.
