MCPHS University Faculty Member Text on Anatomy of the Eye and Orbit, Named to Prestigious Doody’s Core List of Healthcare Titles

The textbook, entitled, Anatomy of the Eye and Orbit: The Clinical Essentials, authored by Thomas F. Freddo, OD, PhD and Edward Chaum, MD, PhD has been selected for inclusion in Doody’s Core Titles in the Health Sciences.

Doody’s Core Titles in the Health Sciences is the respected successor to the Brandon/Hill Selected Lists, which served as the collection development guide for hospital libraries for 40 years until it ceased publication in 2004.

Every year, with the oversight of Doody Enterprises, content specialists and librarians select medical textbooks or software titles that represent essential knowledge for library collections that serve health care professionals. Candidate texts are read and rated on key collection development criteria, a process designed to identify essential purchase recommendations for health science libraries. Books rated highly in this process are deemed to represent a core title that every health science library should have among its holdings.

Each title that is reviewed is scored on five fundamental criteria: authoritativeness of author and publisher; scope and coverage of the subject matter; quality of content (including timeliness); usefulness and purpose; and value for money. Each book is evaluated on a scale of 0 – 3 in each of the five criteria. These scores are averaged together to produce the score displayed next to each title.

Anatomy of the The Eye and Orbit: The Clinical Essentials, received a score of 2.8/3.0. The book was published by Lippincott, Wolters Kluwer. The textbook has also been translated into Italian and Portuguese language editions.

Thomas F. Freddo, OD, PhD, FAAO is a Professor of Optometry at MCP Health Sciences University. Edward Chaum, MD, PhD holds the Margy Ann and J. Donald M. Gass Chair in Ophthalmology at Vanderbilt University.
