The Social Determinants of Health and Healthcare Disparities: An Optometric Perspective

Join us Tuesday, June 28, 2022, from 1 - 2 p.m. ET for ASCO’s Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee’s Town Hall on The Social Determinants of Health and Healthcare Disparities: An Optometric Perspective. This interactive program will begin with an overview of the social determinants of health, and the healthcare disparities that play a role in both the access to and the quality of eye care for various patient populations. The subsequent discussion will focus on how this applies to optometric care and how providers can utilize this information to benefit their patients.

This session will be moderated by Michael J. McGovern, OD, FAAO. Speakers include Sean Clarke, PhD, RN, FAAN, Richard M. Soden, OD, FAAO, and Dawn Rigney, MPH.

Dr. Sean Clarke is a health services researcher and nurse academic who currently serves as Executive Vice Dean at the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing. For nearly three decades, he has taught and conducted research on health care safety, professional and interprofessional practice, and health policy at the bachelor’s through doctoral levels in the U.S., including the University of Pennsylvania and Boston College, as well as Canada, Europe, and Asia.

Dr. Richard Soden is a clinical professor and currently the Director of Health Care Development at SUNY College of Optometry. Previously, he served as Vice President for Clinical Affairs at SUNY Optometry for 10 years. Dr. Soden graduated from SUNY college of Optometry in 1979. After graduation, he completed a residency program at the Northport VA Medical Center on Long Island. Dr. Soden remained at Northport VA for 26 years as the Associate Chief of Optometry Service, as well as being a partner in a private group practice. Dr. Soden serves as a third-party consultant for the New York State Optometric Association and has lectured extensively in third-party reimbursement and practice management. He is currently a member of the AOA’s Coding Committee and prior to this, was a member of the Third-Party Committee.

Ms. Dawn Rigney currently serves as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at SUNY College of Optometry overseeing fundraising, marketing, and communications for the College and the University Eye Center. She is a graduate of New York Medical College where she earned her MPH in 2011. Throughout her more than 20-year career, she has focused on raising awareness and resources around access to quality education and healthcare. Ms. Rigney has served on professional panels and advisory committees as well as served as a mentor to others looking to leverage the career for the greater good.

Dr. Michael McGovern is the Chief Medical Officer of the University Eye Center at SUNY College of Optometry. He serves on ASCO's Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee and the Clinical Affairs Committee.
